All are invited to a vigil to respond to the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal. Faculty, staff, and students will speak, including those from Nepal and those who have studied in Nepal or have other connections there. The vigil will include music, interfaith prayers and reflections, and the opportunity to make charitable contributions to partner organizations of Tufts GlobeMed and the Tufts South Asian Political Action Committee. The New York Times recommended a number of organizations for those wishing to make charitable contributions. Sponsored by the Tufts University Chaplaincy, the International Center, the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service, and the International Relations Program.
University Chaplaincy Student Worker Application
University Chaplaincy Seeks Student Workers for Fall 2015
The University Chaplaincy invites applications for our Student Worker Program for the fall of 2015. The Student Worker Program provides the opportunity to learn about the multifaith work of the University Chaplaincy and to assist our chaplains and staff in fulfilling essential functions that support our programs and services. Responsibilities include hospitality and communications, data and record management, web and publications work, and special event staffing. Training and mentoring will be provided through monthly staff meetings and ongoing coaching to build knowledge and skills. Current Tufts students may apply and the University Chaplaincy strives to create a diverse staff team. To view the full position description click here; to apply for the position click here. The Chaplaincy Coordinator will be in contact with candidates regarding interviews.
May Carillon Tune
The current carillon tune is a Welsh folksong called “The Ash Grove.” The original lyrics told the story of a sailor’s love for his sweetheart, who has passed away and is lying beneath “the shades of the lowly ash grove.” 20th-century musician Katherine K. Davis set her text “Let All Things Now Living” to the tune, and it appears in many hymnals. The text relates how all of nature “sings” a song of thanksgiving to God, and it seems appropriate for this spring’s blooming of flowers and trees after a long Boston winter. Although born in Ohio, Davis spent most of her professional life in the Boston area. She studied at Wellesley College, and later taught there and at New England Conservatory. She is buried in Littleton, MA.

Being Muslim is Being Me is a blog and Friday lunch series (12:30-1:15 in the Interfaith Center), hosted by the Muslim Chaplaincy and the Tufts Muslim Student Association. The initiative is designed to raise awareness about the diversity of Muslims in our Tufts community. The hope is to show Islam and Muslims in a more accessible and personable context in order to help change stereotypical perceptions. The informal conversations over lunch will be facilitated by Tufts Muslim Chaplain Celene Ibrahim-Lizzio and members of the MSA. Student speakers will share personal stories. The lunch series is co-sponsored by the AS&E Diversity Fund. All are welcome to attend. Learn more here.
Shimenawa and Maypole Festival
Tuesday, May 5, Noon, Cherry tree in front of Bendetson Hall (Admissions)
The purpose of this ceremony is to help members of the Tufts community rediscover their connections with the earth and, therefore, with each other. A shimenawa is a Japanese rope, used to designate something that is venerable and sacred. We will tie the rope around the old cherry tree in front of Bendetson to thank it for its service to our community. The shimenawa is not a symbol of something else. It does not stand for Tufts, for Japan, for nature, or anything else. It simply points to something that is present, sacred, and available for everyone’s appreciation: the tree itself, nothing more, and nothing less. We will also have two Maypoles, music, snacks, and drinks for children, and some remarks. For more information, please contact Professor Charles Inouye.
Commencement Weekend 2015
The Baccalaureate Service 2015
Saturday, May 16, 3 pm, Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center
The Baccalaureate Service for the senior class at Tufts began in 1865. Baccalaureate is an ancient custom wherein those being admitted to the degree of bachelor are honored with laurels of oration to inspire them as they cross this threshold into their lives beyond. This service is the last time for the senior class to be alone together as a class. One senior is selected to offer the Wendell Phillips Address, and the President offers his parting remarks to the class. The context is a multifaith celebration honoring the heritage of spirituality and values at Tufts through a diversity of religions, philosophies, and cultures in the forms of music, readings, and blessings. All are welcome. For more information, click here. Listed below are the spiritual gatherings that will be held during Commencement Weekend:
