In This Issue: Form Meets Function
Design and function go hand in hand. The way we organize information on our websites and make it visually engaging is a powerful way to convey information and help our site visitors find what they need.
In this issue of the Dornsife Download you’ll find:
  • Tips for choosing web page templates (our platform offers 7!) and recommendations for using design components – the building blocks of your website – to help meet your communication goals

  • Plus, you’ll find best practices for using alternative text so that your site is accessible to people with disabilities and suggestions for the maintenance and upkeep of your site.
As always, if you need assistance with your site, you can find resources and support on our website project hub or you can reach out to the web support team directly at webproject@dornsife.usc.edu or via our Slack channel.
Now, here's the download.

Spotlight On: Site Design

The USC Dornsife website platform is designed to give web editors the ability to customize the layout and look of their sites. Learn how our page templates and design components allow you to create a web presence to support your communication needs.

Choosing a Page Template

Our website has seven page templates, or predefined layouts, to choose from. They include an event listing template that integrates with the USC Event Calendar, a news template for showcasing news or blog posts and a template for displaying video collections.

Examples (top to bottom): 1) Event, 2) video and 3) news listing templates.

How to Use Design Components

Design components are the building blocks of your WordPress web pages. They display images and copy using a wide variety of designs. You can stack them in almost any sequence on a web page to organize information with a one-of-a-kind look and layout.

Tips, Tools + Best Practices

Add Alt Text So Everyone Can Access Your Web Content

Digital accessibility is the practice of ensuring that all digital content is usable by people with disabilities without limitation.

People with visual or other impairments may use screen readers to access website content. This assistive technology conveys the descriptions of images known as alternative text, or alt text, on websites to their users.

Alt text descriptions must be added to images by USC Dornsife website editors and are required by the university to meet accessibility standards.

👤 Update Your Directory Profile
Is the information on your public USC Dornsife directory profile up to date or could it use a refresh?
While the look of profiles has changed with the redesign of the website, they continue to be populated with information you update in MyDornsife and should be reviewed and updated on a regular basis.

📞 Activate Your Site’s Global Contact Footer
The ability to add a contact footer to every page of a site that can be managed from one place in WordPress did not roll out until after our new platform launched in May 2023. Many sites still rely on individual contact blocks that must be updated page by page, or they do not have a contact footer at all.
Using a global contact footer offers visitors important contact information where they expect it and helps unify your site.

🔑 Who Has Access to Edit Your Site?
More than a year has passed since we launched our new site and in that time the people who should have access to edit your site may have changed.
Take a moment to review who has access to your site and update their permissions, if necessary.
