Earth Day 2017
Earth Day 2017
April 13, 2017
Congratulations to your library for choosing to celebrate our planet Earth and beyond through NASA's GLOBE Observer citizen science project!

By now you should have received your Earth Day packet in the mail that contains the following materials that you can provide to your participating patrons:

  • Cloud Teller:printable interactive craft and game familiarizes learners with cloud vocabulary and varying degrees of cloud cover.
  • GLOBE Program Cloud Identification Charts: A combination of handy photos of various cloud types with tips on observation basics.
  • GLOBE Observer cards: Information card to download the GLOBE Observer app.
If you have any questions or concerns about the status of your Earth Day materials, please contact Aaron Albin.
As you begin to prepare your Earth Day programming, we encourage you to review the following steps to maximize your patron's experience:
1) Download the GLOBE Observer App

Be sure to download the free GLOBE Observer app, observe the sky, and contribute your observations to this international program.

When you first open the app, you will need to create a login by entering an email address and an optional referral code, and the system will email you a password.

It is important that you, and your library patrons, use the referral code earth2017 (the code is case-sensitive, so please use all lowercase) when first setting up your login so NASA can make a map of all the contributions from the STAR_Net community.

2) Watch the Earth Day Webinar Archive
Presented by Jessica Taylor, Sarah McCrea and Dorian Janney
Learn how your library can celebrate our planet on Earth Day and beyond through NASA’s GLOBE Observer (GO) citizen science project.  Library patrons can contribute to NASA Earth science by downloading the free GO app, observing the sky, and contributing their observations to this international program.  GO cloud observations are helping NASA scientists understand clouds from below (the ground) and above (from space). Clouds play an important role in transferring energy from the Sun to different parts of the Earth system. Because clouds can change rapidly, scientists need frequent observations from citizen scientists.
3) Review Available Earth Day Resources

STAR_Net has developed a dedicated webpage for Earth Day that has an extensive list of resources for your library.

Included on this page are resources for:
  • Programming (Facilitation Guide, Smartphone & Tablet Apps, Hands-on Activities, Interactive Websites, Handouts, Articles)
  • Partnership Opportunities
  • Promotional Materials (Media Template Package, Social Media Sharables, Images)
  • Online & Physical Earth Day Display (Mural, Videos, Animations, Posters, Books)

4) Additional Information & Support

Below is a list of some popular FAQs that may help your library:

Q: Is this just a one-day event on Earth Day? What if I want to go further?
A: The GLOBE Observer app and resources are evergreen – they can be used any time of the year, not just on Earth Day. While there is extra value getting a large number of people observing clouds on one day, it is important for citizen scientists to observe regularly and beyond Earth Day.

Q: How can I learn more about this opportunity?
A: Find additional information on the “Celebrate Earth Day with NASA’s GLOBE Observer” webinar archive from March 8, 2017 in the STAR_Net webinar series and archive.

Q: Do I need special equipment or training to participate in GLOBE Observer?
A: The only equipment needed is a smart phone or tablet (iOS or Android). Download the GLOBE Observer app at https://observer.globe.gov/about/get-the-app.
The app tutorial provides the information you need to make a cloud observation. If you would like additional practice identifying clouds, check out the Additional Cloud Observation Resources.
