Alumni News from Fenwick
Volume #5             Issue #2              Date: February 2019
Get ready, because Fenwick’s 3rd annual "Raise The Shield" event is coming soon! Raise the Shield, our 24-hour online day of giving, will be held on February 21st. Building on the success of the past two years of Raise the Shield, we are very excited that our 3rd annual effort will feature student-produced videos that highlight those areas of the Friars' student experience that are supported with your generosity through Raise the Shield -- and through the Fenwick Fund year-round.

Some of the videos are quirky, some funny, some poignant, some inspiring, but they all point to the wonderful Dominican spiritual value of community, that which makes Fenwick what it is and who we are. For more information please visit www.raisetheshield.fenwickfriars.com.

Watch the 2019 trailer video by clicking below, and thank you for supporting Fenwick’s academics, fine arts programs, student activities and clubs, athletics and tuition assistance through your participation in Raise the Shield.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:
The Dual Careers of Paul Tierney, Jr. '60

Paul Tierney in his NYC office.
Fenwick High School and University of Notre Dame alumnus Paul Tierney, Jr. ’60 resides on the East Coast in Darien, Connecticut, and New York City. But his humanitarian roots were planted at home in La Grange Park, IL, and at St. Francis Xavier Parish & School.

“My mother and father always talked about the importance of doing good works for your fellow man,” says Mr. Tierney, who is three months into his retirement as chairman of TechnoServe, an international, nonprofit organization that promotes business solutions to poverty. The company works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. “Our clients are small, poor, grassroots,” he notes.

Tierney encourages the use of private equity and venture capital to fund entrepreneurial firms in locales such as Africa and Latin America. As he told Forbes magazine in 2010, he believes this funding approach “can be a superior alternative to the traditional development funds funneled through the likes of the World Bank,” the international financial institution that provides loans to countries of the world for capital projects.

ALUMNI SERVICE IN ACTION:
Sarah Lorenzi '97 Is the Driving Force of CAAEL
Fenwick faculty member Dr. Jerry Lordan remembers how the Chicago Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) began with John Martin, father of Sarah Martin Lorenzi '97:
"Sarah's dad lived in Forest Park and was a high school physical education teacher and coach [with the Stone Park Education Center]. From time to time he would have kids with disabilities transfer into and out from his classes. He could see their desire to participate in sports curtailed by their assignment to alternative-education schools without extracurricular activity programs. Rather than whine and moan, 'Somebody ought to do something!' he decided to be the change he wanted to see. John started the CAAEL.  At first it was just sports like basketball and baseball, which are played indoors.  Then they added baseball, softball and track.  Then they added poetry slams, spelling bees, art shows, musical performances, dances, etc.
"Dad retired and his daughters [Sarah and younger sister, Katie '00] quit their jobs to run the league. The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park is a financial sponsor to the CAAEL Coed Softball Tournament held in June in Forest Park."
Until he moved out of state last year, Fenwick alumnus Jabari Harris '99, a friend of Sarah and Katies's who played basketball for the Friars and UIC Flames, was a basketball coach with CAAEL. Harris also taught physical education at Joseph Academy, a school in Melrose Park serving the needs of young people with severe behavioral, emotional and learning disabilities. www.caael.org

Editor's note: This is the second in what we hope will be a regular feature highlighting how Fenwick alumni are fulfilling the Community Pillar of Dominican Life through service. The many organizations and works to which Friars are committed are important, however, space considerations limit our abiity to highlight all of them.

In the Classroom: A Tale of Two Singers
Pierce and White, guitars in hand, visited two Fenwick English classes studying A Tale of Two Cities.
What’s on your playlist? A playlist is, of course, a list of digital, audio files that can be played back on a media player either sequentially or in a shuffled order. In its most general form, a playlist is simply a list of songs, according to Wikipedia. And almost all the kids have their favorite, thematically inspired lists these days -- and they’re quite passionate about the music they like.

One may not think that playlists in 2019 have much in common with Charles Dickens and A Tale of Two Cities, the historical novel written about the French Revolution 160 years ago. Fenwick English Teacher Geralyn Magrady, however, would beg to differ. Ms. Magrady was introduced to a creative, character-analysis activity when she participated in Stevie Van Zandt’s (“Little Steven”) TeachRock professional-development program. (Yes, that Steven Van Zandt – Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Bandmate and of “The Sopranos” HBO/cable TV fame.)

Paul Jenkins '81 Blogs About Why His Twin Daughters Chose to Stay at Fenwick
The Hill School in Pennsylvania came calling, but Caroline and Cecelia are Friars forever.
I can’t tell you how I felt when the call came in. I knew it was coming, and yet I hesitated to pick up the phone when I saw the number in my caller ID. One of the country’s premier boarding schools* was calling to offer my twin daughters scholarships for their senior year. Juniors at Fenwick, they needed only to say ‘yes’ to be carried away into the ivy-covered embrace of East Coast privilege.

They’re hockey players, and the head coach at the prep school had been recruiting them for years.  We’d been to visit the school several times. The coach had come to watch them play in tournaments around the U.S. and Canada. My wife and I had always said ‘no;’ we couldn’t see sending our youngest off to boarding school.

Setting the Standard for Excellence

High achievements in academics and athletics have been intertwined at Fenwick for 90 years and counting. In 1992, Raymond Wicklander, Jr., Fenwick Class of 1955, gave this speech at the Friars' Athletic Awards ceremony. From Oak Park and Ascension, Ray was a National Honor Society student who played football for four years in high school. He also spent two years swimming and on the staff of The Wick:

On a night similar to this, over 60 years ago in the old Morrison Hotel in downtown Chicago, a new upstart high school from Oak Park, called Fenwick, held its first athletic awards night. Over 900 people attended – in the height of the Depression – for two basic reasons:
