The Promise and Peril of People Analytics
Wednesday January 21 | 1400 18th Ave S Rm A2009 | 12-1p
Leading organizations are increasingly using people analytics to generate insights that drive smarter workforce decisions. The potential is genuinely promising. However, the rapid growth of analytics and workplace technologies has also fueled a “quantified employee” agenda, along with growing concerns about privacy and ethics that can quickly undermine that promise. Many in the field insist that Big Data doesn’t have to mean Big Brother—but some recent high-profile technologies and practices have made employees (and the media) wonder otherwise.

Join us for our first LIVE Learning Innovation Seminar on January 21 from 12-1, when Dr. Salvatore Falletta will walk through a practical seven-step approach—the People Analytics Cycle—for building and scaling people analytics capabilities that are not only evidence-based, but also ethical enough that employees won’t feel like they’re living in a dystopian workplace surveillance thriller.

Chin-Chung Tsai: What is Learning? The role of conceptions of learning in technology- enhanced learning environments
Dr. Chin-Chung Tsai is the Chair of the School of Learning Informatics at National Taiwan Normal University. His research interests focus on technology-enhanced learning, science education and digital pedagogy. Tsai's talk, will first review a series of studies from his research team regarding students’ conceptions of learning for different subject matters and various types of technology- enhanced instructional activities. The interplay among conceptions of learning, approaches to learning and learning outcomes for certain technology- supported environments will also be discussed.

Chen-Chung Liu: How GenAI pedagogical agents operationalize cognitive apprenticeship in constructivist science learning?
Dr. Chen-Chung Liu is a Professor for Science and Technology for Learning at National Central University in Taiwan. He researches technology-enhanced learning focusing particularly on collaborative-learning, computer-supported education and designing socio-technical environments for learning. Dr. Liu’s talk will provide insight on his vision for GenAI pedagogical agents that help students build scientific understanding in authentic or simulated inquiry environments. By analyzing student–agent interactions, the research team illustrates how cognitive apprenticeship is enacted and identifies design insights for developing next-generation agents that better scaffold science learning.

| Jiun-Yu (Jerry) Wu: AI for Human-Centered Learning
Dr. Jiun-Yu Wu is a Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Methodist University, specializing in Learning Analytics. His research is at the intersection of Learning Science and Data Science, including Machine Learning (ML), Generative AI (GenAI), Multilevel Modeling, and Network Analysis. Dr. Wu's talk will introduce the foundational concepts of AI in Education, focusing on its role in enhancing both analytics and classroom practices. It emphasizes the importance of collecting both structured and unstructured multimodal learning data to better understand how students interact with AI. By leveraging AI-driven multimodal learning analytics and theory-informed generative AI, we aim to support more adaptive human learning and Human-AI symbiotic learning.

Gordon Stein has been a stellar LIVE Postdoctoral Fellow over the last two years. In this time he helped multiple projects make large advances. His expertise brought BloxBuddy, an intelligent coding assistant for NetsBlox, to life; created a tool enables learners to train and use small multimodal language models to recognize embodied movements, added functionality to the VR Cave and and transformed a partially developed game into a fully functional application that has already been used by more than 200 fifth-grade students in Metro Nashville Public Schools, with continued use anticipated in future years. Gordon also been successful in developing a "small" language model which will be the basis for the new Textinator app within the Adventures in AI project. A small language model trained on ethically sourced, child-friendly data that supports students’ understanding of how generative AI is trained and used.
Gordon will be leaving LIVE at the end of the month to pursue a full time job. We want to thank him for his many contributions to LIVE. He was an integral member of the community, and we wish him all the best in his next endeavor.
