The amount of discussion about the current version of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, and the implications for education are overwhelming. You might understandably be tempted to stick your head in the sand and pretend nothing is going on.
But it is a big deal. And the next even-more-powerful version of ChatGPT is just around the corner. So not to overwhelm or pretend that we are experts on it, but in the interest of helping us all develop an understanding of the implications, this newsletter edition shares a few ways to start learning and thinking about it.

| Are Students Using AI to Write Essays (And Getting Away with It)? |
With the release of artificial intelligence chatbots, like ChatGPT, students are taking advantage of these tools to complete writing assignments. For example, you can feed a discussion prompt into the chatbot, and it will generate a multi-paragraph response.

Education technology publication, EdSurge, recently looked at how students are using AI to write their essays and whether plagiarism detectors like SafeAssign and TurnItIn can catch them.
Before you get too worried about redesigning your written assignments, one student has already developed a tool to help faculty keep their students accountable. Edward Tian of Princeton University built an app that detects when text is composed by ChatGPT. His app, GPTZero, scans text for “perplexity” and “burstiness” - two measures for human-generated content. Read more about his app and how to access it at NPR.
