Hockaday Highlights

Thank you to all who attended our Admission Preview last Sunday. We welcomed over 450 students and parents on an absolutely beautiful afternoon.  Some of our most popular sessions were Integrated Math for Middle School and Upper School, Forensic Science meets Law and Crime in Literature, Hockaday Debate, Meet the Coaches, Improv & Theater, Finding Your Inner Artist, and Robotics. Sunday evening, prospective boarding students stayed in our Residence Department for our Overnight Boarder Visit. Girls had an opportunity to experience Dallas during an Amazing Race with our dorm staff. What a fun weekend!
If you were not able to join us on Sunday, or you want to come back to enjoy a different perspective, we encourage you to visit our campus for a tour, a parent visit, a student shadow day or the Inclusion and Community Panel and Reception.  Please visit our website to register.
We have two student performances coming up. The Upper School fall show, Somewhere South of Galway which was written and directed by senior Grace Lowry, will open on November 3.  The Eighth-grade Musical, Annie Jr. is showing this week. Students assume many leadership positions as they prepare to make these shows a smashing success.  There are student choreographers, technical directors, set designers, costume designers, and lighting designers.  Their skills are amazing!
Please enjoy the Hockaday Highlights below. Remember that you can always visit our website, for up to the minute news stories and Admission information.
All my best,

Installation of Dr. Karen Warren Coleman

On Oct. 15, students, faculty, members of the Hockaday community and distinguished guests gathered in Penson Gym to celebrate the installation of Dr. Karen Warren Coleman as the 13th Eugene McDermott Head of School. The installation featured the Upper School Concert Choir as well as student speakers, including the presidents of Lower, Middle, and Upper Student Council. Colby College President Dr. David A. Greene gave the keynote address before Dr. Coleman was officially installed. Dr. Greene and Dr. Coleman highlighted the strength and the importance of an all-girls' education in their remarks. Rev. Elizabeth Davenport, the Dean of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago shared the invocation and benediction. The afternoon ended with the entire student body singing the school song before gathering for a reception on Graduation Terrace.

Boarder Buddies

This year we have 73 Boarding students from 12 states and 11 foreign countries living in our Residence Department.  Four Dorm Moms live on the halls with these Hockadaisies.  Every year, each of our early childhood classes (Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and Primer) is paired with one new Boarder. This particular Prekindergarten class has been paired with Mohana, a student who is from Chicago.  Our youngest students toured Mohana's Hocka-home, met her roommate Sohee from South Korea, enjoyed a home-baked treat in the lounge and learned about Mohana's experience living with a large group of sisters and a new found family at Hockaday. Mohana will continue to spend time with “her” Prekindergarten class throughout the year.

Track and Field Team Meets Four-Time Olympian

The 2017 SPC-Champion Hockaday Track and Field team had the opportunity to attend the SMU Athletic Forum featuring four-time Olympian Allyson Felix on October 17. Her philosophy and work ethic echo the themes we teach our athletes. She discussed how hard work, humility, drive, determination, and a competitive spirit helped her reach her goals on the world stage. She shared that she is grateful for the setbacks in her career because they gave her even more motivation to push through disappointment, and she hopes to reach her fifth Olympic games in Tokyo 2020.

Did you know we have a Lower School Orchestra? Click below to hear them play.

Starting in Prekindergarten, students are introduced to the basic elements of music, singing, ear training, movement, and playing instruments. The First through Fourth-grade music curriculum encompasses music history, theory, ORFF and Kodaly techniques, and the study of the symphony orchestra. There are various times during the year for students to perform at school, learn from guest musicians, and attend the musical productions in the Dallas area. Hockaday is unique in that we have our very own Lower School Orchestra. The First, Second, and Third-grade students present an interdisciplinary musical production at each grade level and all the Fourth-grade students present a musical production based on the classic literary work. As early as Prekindergarten, students play pitched and unpitched percussion instruments and in Second-grade the students are introduced to string instruments like the violin, viola, cello or string bass.
