Congratulations to our December 2022 graduates!
|
On December 9, 2022, the college welcomed 130 Bachelor of Science, 24 Master of Science, and 6 Ph.D. graduates as new alumni. As we welcome this group into our distinguished alumni community, we wish them well as they embark on new adventures. You make us #UNOProud!
Alumnus Mark Romig delivered the keynote commencement address, imparting words of wisdom to new graduates, including “the key is to be adaptable and to be ready at each fork in the road you come to–to make the best and right move because you believe it fits what you want to do, and when you do, you will grow”.

In December 2022, “Genomic analysis of hypoxia inducible factor alpha in ray-finned fishes reveals missing Ohnologs and evidence of widespread positive selection” was published in Scientific Reports. The paper was the result of a multi-disciplinary research project conducted by Dr. Bernard Rees, Professor and Greater New Orleans Foundation Chair in Aquatic Conservation in the Department of Biological Sciences and Dr. Christopher Summa, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science. From the Department of Biological Sciences, the research team also included graduate student Taylor Murphy, alumna and now post-doctoral researcher Courtney Babin, and former post-doctoral researcher and instructor Ian Townley. Fishes are increasingly challenged by low dissolved oxygen in nature and their survival relies, in part, upon their molecular responses. This study sheds new light on the evolution and diversity of the hypoxia inducible factor, the master regulator of oxygen-dependent gene expression, in fishes.

Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Cheng Shi, published “piRNAs regulate a Hedgehog germline-to-soma pro-aging signal” in Nature Aging in January 2023. The research reveals an unconventional role of the piRNA pathway in transcriptional regulation of Hedgehog signaling and a new role of Hedgehog signaling in the regulation of longevity and somatic maintenance.

Dr. Zhengchang Liu, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and his research group published “Ubiquitin-Conjugating Enzymes Ubc1 and Ubc4 Mediate the Turnover of Hap4, a Master Regulator of Mitochondrial Biogenesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae” in the peer-reviewed journal Microorganisms in December 2022. The research was conducted by undergraduate student, Arielle Hunter, and graduate students Denise Capps, Mengying Chiang, and Tammy Pracheil. In this paper, Dr. Liu’s group uncovered a mechanism that regulates the expression of genes encoding mitochondrial proteins in response to changes in the functional state of mitochondria.

Dr. Eduardo Gallo was awarded a nearly $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study impulsive behavior. Dr. Gallo completed his B.S. in Biological Sciences from UNO in 2004, before going on to graduate work in neuroscience and neurophysiology at Cornell University. Now an assistant professor at Fordham University, his research focuses on understanding how the brain controls motivated behavior. Mentoring is a key part of his research lab and, of his undergraduate and graduate students, he says “I hope to inspire them to pursue meaningful careers in solving the mysteries of the brain.”
