Use the CMS to easily locate unused site elements
Summer Site Refresh: Old Files & Pages |
Did you make the commitment to refresh your website this summer? There’s still plenty of time to hop on the Batmobile bandwagon — join us!
The CMS makes it easy to locate old, unused images and files:
|
- Open your _images or _files folder or subfolder to display a list of all contents.
- Click on the words Last Modified at the top of that final column to sort results with the oldest items up top.
- Right-click on any file name and select More > Relationships to see if an item is currently placed on a page. Delete old images and files without relationships.
- Alternatively, when items are sorted in the default Name column, you may notice file names that look like duplicates. Check Relationships to identify which site assets you can delete.
- Learn more about Relationships in the CMS.
|
Use this same sorting process on other folders to check pages’ last-modified dates. If a page hasn’t been edited for more than a year or two, it’s time to review it and make sure the content is still current. (Who will win the prize for the oldest, untouched page? 😜)
Unused images and files/PDFs should be deleted to save space on our CMS servers. Old pages may be moved to an _archive folder, if you think you’ll need to reference them in the future. (Please don’t delete pages on Blink or TritonLink — send a Bat signal to wts@ucsd.edu for assistance.)
If you missed it, here’s the first email in our summertime site-refresh series, and our Blink page with tips for website organization.

Do you have article or drawer pages with an intro banner across the top?
We’re adjusting this feature so the banner no longer resizes itself when the headline text is blank. Note that this does not apply to the homepage template hero, only intro banners with no headline text.
We’ll push this out to all sites on Monday, July 28. Identify pages with banner images so you can check them next week and adjust if needed.
