Emails that are sent during this time will not be delivered until the maintenance is complete. We apologize for any inconvenience and will respond as soon as possible.

THE BREBEUF FOOD LAUNCHED THIS WEEK!

Brebeuf Jesuit is once again holding a canned food drive during Lent, which began yesterday Wednesday, February 10 and ends Thursday, March 24.

Last spring, our students, faculty, staff, and families participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks! In addition, cash donations from our school community were able to buy nearly 30,000 pounds of food. Homeroom classrooms at Brebeuf will hold collections once again to compete for the grand prize – a pizza party. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member to collect 20 cans each.

St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!

How to Help

To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), bring donations of support to the front lobby desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.

By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis! Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.

Student Spotlight

LEIGHANN ECKRICH '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love Brebeuf’s schedule because it allows us to have time to do school work, but also be involved in other things like clubs and extracurricular activites. I use my free time to see teachers, especially in the math office, study in the library and use the study rooms. The schedule has made me better prepared for college because it taught me to manage my own time and be responsible.
Favorite Class:
This year my favorite class is AP Literature with Mr. Wagner. It’s a really challenging course but he’s a great teacher. There are many opportunities to grow as a writer because we look at all types of literature. Over the past four years, I think my favorite class has been Freshman English with Mrs. Swank. I really like English and the class was a nice transition from middle school to high school. Mrs. Swank engaged the class in a way that made me feel comfortable.
Future Plans:
I would like to study business or communications depending on the college I attend. I’ve applied to six schools and my top three are Saint Mary’s, Purdue, and the University of Dayton, but I currently remain undecided. However, I do know that over the summer I’ll be working at a Pediatric Doctor’s Office.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Tennis Team
Cross Country
Vice President of Senior Student Council
President of Conservation Club
Campus Ministry Advisory Board
Admission Ambassador
Presidential Ambassador
STRAP Club
Kriya Club
Kairos Leader
Random Fact:
I can scuba dive. I learned how to scuba dive in Florida last Winter Break.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
A big reason why Brebeuf is so academically rigorous is because of how hard teachers push students. The workload isn’t too bad because we have enough time to complete the work with the help of PRTs, breaks, and after-school time, but teachers have high expectations. Currently, I’m writing a paper for AP Literature that has been a little difficult because you have to look beyond Brebeuf to find research, but the assignment is an example of how teachers expect a lot and that they believe students are capable of putting forth their best effort.
Coming from middle school to Brebeuf was challenging at first because I wasn’t as prepared as others. Though we jump right into assignments, the teachers are here to help you through the transition even though they push you. So you just need to know how to manage your own time and be prepared to work hard.
Would you rather…
Eat pizza or ice cream as the only food for the rest of your life?
I would rather eat ice cream because it really is my favorite food.
Win the lottery or live twice as long?
I would rather win the lottery because you would have lots of money to do fun things and see the world. I also wouldn’t want to live past my friends and family.
Meet an alien visitor or travel to outer space?
I would rather meet an alien so I could show them around Earth and they could see how we live.
Live in a houseboat or RV?
I would rather live on a houseboat because I like the water and then I could easily go from country to country.
Live life as a dog or cat?
I would rather live life as a dog because they are more lovable and have more energy.

Scheduling News from the Academic Counseling Department

Academic Counselors visited all Religion classrooms on Wednesday, January 27, and Thursday, January 28, to assist freshman, sophomore, and junior students with entering their course selections through Portals for the 2016-2017 academic year. It was an all-day endeavor; but it was successfully completed and the students did an outstanding job coming to class prepared with their completed course selection sheets that they had received the week before in class meetings.

The next step is for each student to have an individual meeting with his or her academic counselor during the month of February or March in order to finalize these course selections and also to discuss their four-year graduation plan, current grades, and college/career aspirations. Each student received an email that contains a link to his or her counselor’s February and March calendars so they can sign up for a 30 minute meeting during either a PRT or break. All scheduling meetings will be concluded by the end of March. Brebeuf appreciates your patience as we work on getting all of our students successfully scheduled for the 2016-2017 school year!

Time: 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

1. The Midwest Jesuits sponsor http://jesuitprayer.org .This website provides a reflection on the daily readings and a Lenten reflection. It provides “prayer cards” for some Jesuit prayers as well as the opportunity to download the JesuitPrayer App. One of the prayer cards is a prayer attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola that addresses anxiety and depression. This seems fitting in light of our community conversations related to student stress.
2. The Ignatian Solidarity Network offers the program “Lift Every Voice: A Lenten Journey Toward Racial Justice http://ignatiansolidarity.net/lent-2016/. This is be a nice way to continue to reflect on our community conversations related to privilege, diversity and inclusion.
3. Loyola Press sponsors a website called http://www.ignatianspirituality.com which has many Lenten resources to enjoy. While there are many great resources, please highlight the Ignatian Workout for Lent Retreat.
4. Finally, Creighton University’s Online Ministry Office offers a tremendous number of Lenten resources http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/.
