This week's featured photo was captured by RVR's Facilities & Grounds Superintendent, Travis Green. Travis took this lovely shot of a humming bird near the Ranch House lap pool. Thanks for sharing this gem with us, Travis!
Do you have an awesome photo that was taken in or around RVR or the Roaring Fork Valley? We would love to feature your picture in an upcoming newsletter.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side Birds on a Wire by, Donna Chase
Construction noise aside, the mornings at RVR are a bit quieter. Many of the summer avian inhabitants are preparing to migrate south to avoid our winter. Songbirds such as bluebirds, warblers, meadowlarks, and swallows (to name a few) arrived last spring, following the food and returning to their breeding grounds. After breeding and nesting and with insects and berries less available, they now make the trip in reverse. (Some songbirds remain in the Roaring Fork Valley, i.e. chickadees, towhees, finches, some sparrows, etc, though they might go to lower elevations.) Swallows are possibly our most abundant visitors. There are five species of swallows in this area—Barn, Tree, Cliff, Violet-green and Rough-Winged. All of these species forage for insects (flies, wasps, moths, mosquitos, adult aquatic insects) over open spaces near water. These aerial acrobats fly with a wide gaping mouth performing rapid turns and banks while flapping and gliding. This show also attracts potential mates! Most of their time is spent in the air pursuing food, nest building (in building overhangs, under bridges, sandy cliff sides, refurbished old woodpecker cavities) and providing for offspring. In late summer however, you may notice that the swallows fly less and gather en masse on utility wires. This gathering is in preparation for their long journey south to Central and South America until their return next spring. Enjoy the last few days of these magnificent flying machines!
Swallow Factoids:
- Average weight .50 ounces
- An average “family” consumes over 300,000 insects over spring/summer
- Songs and calls are squeaks and chatter
- Nests often made with mud and saliva
- Most are adapted to human presence

Green Tip
Please enjoy the following eco-friendly tidbit brought to you by Friends of the Environment:
Putting compostable items in the compost bin instead of the trash can is one of the most effective first steps you can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated when our food and yard waste is landfilled. Composting also produces a nutrient-rich soil amendment used on farms and home gardens alike. But when compost gets contaminated with non-compostable items, problems arise. Contaminants that are routinely found include obviously non-compostable items such as glass, plastics, and metals, but also decals/stickers, twist ties, and rubber bands from produce. No one wants these items in our local farms and garden beds, so please be careful with what you put in the compost bin.

Trunk or Treating is a fun alternative to regular trick-or-treating! Park your car at the Ranch House (or Barn overflow), and decorate your car for Halloween. Kids walk from vehicle to vehicle, collecting candy along the way. Some people get very elaborate with their trunk decor and even make mini haunted house scenes! Or, keep it simple, the kids will have a blast either way.

Long Range Planning Update
The Long Range Planning committee continues to work with McMahon & Associates on a plan for the Ranch House and surrounding amenities. Thanks to everyone who has provided input and especially for all the great ideas about how to make the facilities work better for everyone. The committee’s role is to help the community find consensus about what type of facilities we need and want for the future. It’s been 25 years since the Ranch House was built and it’s time to plot our course for the next 25 years. It’s also an opportunity to think proactively about our expenditures, not just repair the pool deck one year and decide we need to expand the pool deck two years later.
By later this fall the committee expects to have a plan ready to present to the board and to the whole RVR community. This will include an opinion of the probable cost as well as the committee’s thoughts on how to fund the work. All this information will be made available to the entire community and, importantly, all homeowners then will be asked to provide their comments and concerns. This will happen through a series of town hall meetings and a detailed survey (yes, there needs to be another survey). It is only going to be appropriate to move ahead with the recommended improvements if there is strong community support for them after everyone has seen the plan and understands the estimated costs.
In the meantime, if you have ideas or concerns, please take a minute to reach out to any member of the committee. There is a committee member from just about every neighborhood in RVR. If you don’t know the one from your neighborhood, feel free to reach out to Ashley Lynch at ashley.lynch@rvrma.org for any contact information you need. John Lund is the committee chair and he is willing to meet with or talk to any homeowner who wishes to do so. John can be reached at 801-560-1137.
The Committee’s next meeting is Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., in the Ranch House conference room. These meetings are open to community and also can be attended via Zoom.

Be Bear Aware
Evidence of bears in the area have been brought to our attention by community members in the Old Town neighborhood and Crystal Canyon Drive. We may see more bear activity in upcoming weeks as they prepare for hibernation. Bears can be attracted to the neighborhood in various ways, including trash, bird feeders, pet food, barbeque grills, fruit and compost.

Drive Safely
With school back in session, children are traveling through the neighborhood on their way to and from school. We would like to remind all residents to slow down and remain cautious and aware while driving in RVR.
The posted speed limit throughout RVR is 20 mph. Please help our RVR kiddos stay safe.

E -Bikes
Electric bikes are very popular and we are seeing more and more of them around the neighborhood. If this is your favorite method of transportation throughout RVR, we ask that you please exercise caution and follow the rules of the road. There are plenty of opportunities for your electric bike to shine outside of the neighborhood, please keep your speed in check and always follow the posted speed limit.

House Bill 22-1137
As announced in previous board meetings, and reflected in the posted meeting minutes, we are working with legal counsel to amend two key policies, ensuring alignment with new Colorado legislation. HB 22-1137 went into effect on August 9. This new legislation is complex, to ensure that thoughtful drafts are presented for board approval, it is likely that such drafts will be voted on in the September board meeting. In the meantime, board and management are ensuring that we are in full compliance, given that CCIOA law supersedes our governing documents.
