Faculty Reflections
Donald Young - Latin
Donald Young teaches all levels of Latin at The Academy. Following are some of his thoughts on learning.
"Roman philosopher and playwright Seneca the Younger has this to say about the learning process: Homines, dum docent, discunt—“While men teach, they learn.” This mutual growth is part of what attracts me to teaching, and it is this spirit that I have found in abundance at The Academy. I find it in questions that stretch my knowledge and challenge my powers of expression, in hallway conversations about music or magic or international relations, in colleagues who entertain my scattered questions. Students here have a unique chance to share their knowledge and passions—from mythology to medicine to 20th century literature to art—and this enriching of our common education through the contributions of all members is, for me, a defining feature of our community."
CONTRA DANCE APRIL 30
Please remember that the fundraising contra dance takes place on Saturday April 30th at the Guiding Star Grange  (401 Chapman Street in Greenfield). The band, Polaris, features our own Sam Zakon-Anderson, and calling will be by Steve Zakon-Anderson. Steve is offering a special introductory session for Academy families at 7:30 PM and general dancing will begin at 8 PM. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students, with a family cap of $30 for up to six people in the same family. Come and raise FUN while you raise FUNDS for The Academy! For more information please call Steve Zakon-Anderson at 413-369-4369.
F Block - Far From Home
Film Screening and Discussion
.
Our community was treated to an incredible presentation by former Academy student and filmmaker Galen Knowles and the subject of his documentary film Far From Home, Brolin Mawejje.  We watched the film together, and then enjoyed a fantastic conversation with both young men about their life experiences and the stories involved in making the film.
Blood Drive - April 26
The Red Cross returns to campus for its twice yearly Blood Drive at The Academy!  The Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, April 26, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students are bringing home donor forms, with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Not only does the drive help save lives, it also has the potential to garner college scholarships for our seniors.
Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code.
Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event!  Please contact Nora Bates Zale if you are interested in volunteering to bake, or if you have any questions or concerns about the event. Thanks in advance for your support!

Class of 2016 - College Acceptances
This year's senior class has had a successful year in terms of college acceptance. Final decisions as to where our seniors will end up next year are still filtering in, and I'm not ready to share that information with you at this time. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement in a future Bulletin. For now, I'd like to share the list of where our students were accepted. You'll note that most of the schools are concentrated on the east coast. That's for the simple reason that most American college students live within 250 square miles of where they grew up.
