Exploring Turtle Rock Park's Bountiful Biodiversity
By Climate Resiliency Fellow Bella Kurtz
| |
| On Friday, May 23 five folks joined me for a BioBlitz at Turtle Rock Park. We began the morning with a brief instructional overview of the iNaturalist app—we discussed what iNaturalist is, how using the app contributes to the largest existing biodiversity dataset, and how to make a good observation using the app. This was an important component of the event because the observations that attendees made were added to a project that was created on iNaturalist specifically for this Turtle Rock Park BioBlitz. After the instructional overview, we went outside to explore the biodiversity in Turtle Rock Park. In less than two hours, 92 observations were made, and 48 different species were identified! Turtle Rock Park has an incredible amount of biodiversity post-Tamarack Fire. Even though the Turtle Rock Park BioBlitz project is now closed, you can help document the species recovery at Turtle Rock Park by joining iNaturalist and making an observation whenever you visit the park.

| Congratulations to Neil!
On May 9 AWG Forest Health Coordinator Neil Mortimer graduated summa cum laude from University of Minnesota, Duluth. He earned a Master of Tribal Resource & Environmental Stewardship and a post-baccalaureate certificate in Tribal Natural Resource Stewardship, Economics, and Law. We are grateful that Neil decided to join our team last summer even though he was heading into the arduous final year of this academic endeavor. Neil, being Neil, wishes to acknowledge AWG's leadership for our support by being flexible. We recognize Neil for working so hard to balance school, work, and his personal life, and commend his academic excellence. Congratulations, Neil!
