Listening, preparing and striving to level the playing field

The college’s associate deans and its chief of staff and operations sat down for a series of interviews to describe how they are preparing for the big issues framing the start of the 2020-21 academic year, including COVID-19 and matters of equity and inclusion in the wake of George Floyd’s death. A COVID-19 early warning system

David Freedman is testing virus levels in wastewater on Clemson University’s main campus and the surrounding communities to provide an early warning system showing how fast the virus is spreading. Freedman is chair of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences.

Protecting EMTs from COVID-19

A student-led group of researchers that designed a COVID-19 protection device has deployed 40 units for use by emergency medical technicians in the Upstate. Those involved were students Amanda LeMatty, Robert Falconer, Noah Ashley and Ali Nafchi. Their faculty mentors were John DesJardins, the Robert B. and Susan B. Hambright Leadership Professor; Delphine Dean, the Ron and Jane Lindsay Family Innovation Professor; and Ehsan Mousavi, an assistant professor in the Nieri Family Department of Construction Science and Management.

Creating world-class civil engineers

Jennifer Ogle remembers being the “small fish” in a big pond when she was a college freshman, but now she’s a roaring Tiger. Ogle, who went on to a career in higher education, will oversee the adoption of a new curriculum as the new associate chair of the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering.

Leading the way in nuclear-energy research

Three of the college’s researchers are well positioned to advance nuclear energy research after receiving awards from the U.S. Department of Energy. The researchers are: Brian Powell, Fjeld Professor in Nuclear Environmental Engineering and Science; Ming Tang, associate professor of materials science and engineering; and Jianhua “Joshua” Tong, associate professor of materials science and engineering.

From the Dean

Although the beginning of this semester is not typical of any in my past 28 years at Clemson University, much still feels the same. Over the past month, we have welcomed our returning students in addition to more than 1,500 new undergraduates and approximately 350 new graduate students as well as new faculty and staff to our college, and while in-person instruction has been delayed until Sept. 21, our college community is responding with the ingenuity, flexibility and goodwill that we are known for. The in-depth interviews with our administrative team in this issue provide specific details on how the college has adapted to the current situation. As you can see, we are well positioned as always for a successful fall semester and academic year.
Even though they have been working and studying remotely, our faculty and students have continued their wide-ranging research addressing today’s challenges, and this month’s newsletter highlights some of their efforts. In addition to healthcare and wastewater testing for the novel coronavirus, our faculty are also focusing on critical research in nuclear energy and cutting-edge concepts that are changing the automotive industry.
Also featured in this issue is Jennifer Ogle, who has led study-abroad programs that have helped bring clean water to Haiti and much-needed supplies to storm-ravaged Dominica. Now, as the new associate chair in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering, she is overseeing the adoption of a project-based curriculum that will help create the innovators and leaders of the future.
