Greetings from the Director

Happy Spring! It hardly seems possible, but later this month we will be welcoming many of you back to campus. From the 5th to the 65th reunions, gift activity is ticking up thanks to your conversations with peers. This is the time when we’re privileged to see the deep and long-lasting connections that alumni have with each other and Yale, and it inspires our work every day.

Recently, Vice President for Development Joan O’Neill announced that For Humanity has reached the $4.7 billion mark. This includes reunion gifts across four central campaign themes, three of which – Arts and Humanities for Insight, Collaborating for Impact, and Leaders for a Better World – have been featured in our Reunion Giving Volunteer Newsletters. In this issue, we focus on the final pillar, Science for Breakthroughs. Yale’s strength in medicine, data science, and quantum mechanics – just to name a few – shows that Yale has the knowledge and tools to help address complex global challenges and be at the forefront of discovery.

Below, I hope you will enjoy reading about some of the ways that Yale is investing in the sciences. Be sure to read our Volunteer Spotlight on what inspires Yale trustee Ann Miura-Ko ’98 and Al Ko ’98, who are both serving on their 25th Reunion Gift Committee this year.

SCIENCE FOR BREAKTHROUGHS

For Humanity Illuminated

In March, the latest For Humanity Illuminated event took place in New York City with “Cities and Climate Solutions: Catalyzing Change for a Sustainable Future.” Six Yale-affiliated experts discussed their work in engineering, human health, architecture, conservation, and environmental science to find solutions for a sustainable planet. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Ann Miura-Ko '98 and Albert J. Ko '98

Ann and Al have served in a number of volunteer positions at Yale, including on reunion gift committees, and Ann on the Yale Corporation. Their interest in the sciences and service to others began long before they became alumni.

What was your first volunteer role at Yale? What led you to it?

Ann: My first volunteer role was as part of the Alumni Schools Committee interviewer team. I wanted to connect with students who were interested in applying to Yale and thought that this was a great way of getting the word out and learning about students who were excited about Yale.
