University of Oregon
A Message from the Division of Student Life
Dear students,
The University of Oregon is committed to fostering a culture of safety and respect. Ensuring students a safe and inclusive learning environment is a responsibility we take seriously and is fundamental to the new policy on Student Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Violence Complaint and Response
This new policy changes the reporting requirements for employees so that most employees are expected to follow a student’s wishes when learning that a student has experienced sex- or gender-based discrimination or harassment.
Here are the key items I want you to know about the new policy:
UO is committed to providing you an environment free of all forms of discrimination and harassment.
The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity continues to provide assistance to students who experience discrimination or harassment that is not sex- or gender-based. All UO employees are still responsible for reporting information about other forms of discrimination and harassment based on race, religion, national origin, age, ability etc. For more information please visit the AAEO website or respect.uoregon.edu
There are now three categories of employees when students disclose sex- or gender-related discrimination or harassment, including violence.
  1. Designated Reporters—have authority to address and resolve a situation involving a discrimination or harassment.
Examples: Deans, Department Heads, Directors of Student Life programs, Resident Assistants.
A complete list of Designated Reporter titles is available on the Title IX website.
  2. Confidential Employees—have professional obligations and privileges that offer an additional layer of confidentiality.
Examples: health care and mental health professional, advocates in the Crisis Intervention and Sexual Violence Support Services office, attorneys.
  3. Student-directed Employees—are all other university employees, including faculty, who do not have a Designated Reporter title or whose position does not offer confidentialit

You do not have to make an official report to get help.
  • All employees are expected to connect a student in need with help and resources.
  • Students can receive counseling and support regarding their experience while considering their options for making an official report to the university.
Connecting you to resources is a priority.
We want you to get help when you need it. UO offers quick access to services on and off campus:
  • Safe website: safe.uoregon.edu
  • Crisis Intervention and Sexual Violence Support Services (Confidential)
    167 Oregon Hall
    541-346-8194
You have options for making an official report.
If you have experienced sex- or gender-based discrimination or harassment and would like to make a report, please take action:
The Title IX website is a great resource for you.
It provides information and resources to address concerns about gender discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual violence, which include:
Students who are also university employees are protected from workplace harassment.
The new policy may not apply to some student employee disclosures of discrimination or harassment experienced while at work. Supervisors of student employees are still required to report workplace harassment disclosed to them by someone they directly supervise. For more information on this exception please visit the Title IX website.
The University of Oregon is committed to providing a comprehensive and integrated response to students who have experienced any form of sexual harassment or discrimination. Our goal is to ensure that all students who report to the university are met with a caring and compassionate response, and are provided with access to all available resources necessary to continue their academic program.
We are here to help. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Darci Heroy
