BME Publishes New Telemedicine Rules
Final rules become effective on Oct. 31
Tthe practice of telemedicine is becoming more prevalent as technological capabilities have improved. The increased reliance on technology and public demands for access to medical services via technology prompted the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners (BME) to begin a review of the licensure requirements for telemedicine in 2014. During the rule-making process, the TMA legal department monitored the meetings and provided comments and testimony regarding each iteration of the rule.
The BME recently published its final telemedicine rules and they are effective on October 31, 2016.

ICD-10 grace period expired on October 1
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the ICD-10 grace period, which began in October of last year, has expired on Oct. 1. The grace period was created to help ease physicians' transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10. During the grace period, Medicare claims were not denied solely on the specificity of the ICD-10 diagnosis code, as long as the physician submitted an ICD-10 code from an appropriate family of codes. In addition, during the grace period Medicare claims were not audited based on the specificity of diagnosis codes if the code was from the appropriate family.

TMA has a short 10-minute spotlight video, CME Requirements for TN Doctors, reviewing the CME requirements for both medical doctors and osteopathic physicians licensed by the state of Tennessee. This video walks through the requirements in Tennessee law and the rules promulgated by each licensing board.
- Online courses are available on TMA's website and the link is also included for your convenience on the NAM website here.
- If you have any questions or problems with the online class, contact Angie Madden at angie.madden@tnmed.org.
