College of Education Hosts Inaugural Future Teacher Leadership Academy for Local High School Students

The free two-week program, which ran from June 13-24, aimed to encourage high school students and recent high school graduates in the St. Louis region to envision careers in education. The program is a joint effort between the College of Education and the UMSL Office of Precollegiate Services.

UMSL Social Peers promotes inclusive campus community


Sabrina Kraus (left) and Tyler Haynes (center) enjoy a Tritons basketball game with fellow members of the inaugural UMSL Social Peers cohort. This past school year, 18 students joined the yearlong program, which pairs full-time undergraduate students from across campus with students in the Succeed Program based on common interests to foster a more inclusive community.

Counseling PhD student Monica Phelps-Pineda wins minority fellowship award


Monica Phelps-Pineda won the National Board of Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Award, which included a $20,000 prize. The award will help Phelps-Pineda with her goal of securing a faculty position in a CACREP-accredited counseling program, where she intends to apply a “very necessary social justice lens” to counseling, education, dialogue and practice. It will also help her as she continues her doctoral research on multicultural counseling supervision.

Tom Hoerr, scholar in residence in the UMSL College of Education, examines the role empathy plays in the success of a school leader in “The Principal as Chief Empathy Officer: Creating a Culture Where Everyone Grows.”

Gateway Writing Project’s OneCity Stories program teaches high schoolers to use their voices for social change

The OneCity Stories program is sponsored by UMSL’s Gateway Writing Project and brought together 11 high school students from across the St. Louis region to hone their writing and multimedia skills.

Shea Kerkhoff and Cassandra Suggs launch ‘Show Me Literacies’ podcast


This May, Dr. Shea Kerkhoff, an assistant professor of literacy at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, and Dr. Cassandra Suggs, a graduate of UMSL’s Heritage Leadership EdD program and principal at Wildwood Middle School, launched the “Show Me Literacies Podcast.” The podcast is aimed at bridging the gap between education research and practice in the field.

Belinda Quimby worked in the performing arts field for several years before changing career paths and enrolling in the College of Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
