Volunteer Appreciation Happy Hour

The pandemic may stop us from getting together but we still want to celebrate all of our wonderful volunteers! Join LVCA staff for a virtual Happy Hour on Friday, July 10 to recognize our volunteers and the many contributions they have made to our organization over the last year.
We will announce our 2019-2020 Tutors of the Year, recognize several non-tutor volunteers, and update everyone on what we've been working on during the shutdown.
When: Friday, July 10
Time: 5:00–6:00 p.m.
Where: Zoom
Pour yourself your favorite beverage and log in to Zoom to celebrate with us. We can't wait to "see" you there!

Fresh Farmacy Partnership with Sentara and Local Food Hub Feeds Students

When our neighbors at Sentara Starr Hill Health Center reached out about an opportunity to partner with the Fresh Farmacy program, we jumped at the chance to provide fresh produce to our students.
For two weeks now, we've been able to hand out 25 bags of fruits and vegetables to our students from the sidewalk of the Jefferson School City Center. The partnership will continue through at least August.
"This has provided a great chance for us to see our students and check-in with them," said Heather Tebbenhoff our Community Engagement Specialist. "It's clear that there is a need within our student population for fresh produce and we're so glad that Sentara thought to include us in this initiative."

Continuing Appointment Only Phase

Despite the state entering Phase 3 of opening on July 1, we have decided to remain in our current phase of reopening. Students and tutors are welcome to make appointments to visit the office to use a computer, check out/return materials from the library, or to meet with a member of staff. All visitors must cover their face when entering the office and should not come to an appointment if they, or someone in their home, has had a fever or has been sick.
As a reminder, students and tutors can not meet one-on-one within our office. We encourage tutoring to continue remotely or in public locations while practicing the recommended precautions.
Throughout the month, we will continue to assess reopening plans and we will make announcements if we decide to adjust our reopening plans. We appreciate your patience as we do our best to keep everyone safe.

2020 The Joy of Writing Coming Soon

Our 2020 edition of The Joy of Writing is currently in process and we hope to have it ready to print by the end of the month.
This annual publication is an opportunity for adult students, who are learning how to read and write, to have their stories published in a collection of writings with their peers. This activity builds confidence in our students and allows many of them to share their stories of perseverance with the community.
Here's a sneak peek of one of the stories from this year's book:
When I was 9 years old, I saw my Mother go out one door of our house and my Father went out another door, after their big fight.
My mother went to a seamstress and asked her to make two pairs of pants.
Then two weeks later, my Mother rode a horse back to the seamstress. She tried on the pants. They fit her. So she got on the horse and said, "Now I wear the pants in the family!!"
She rode over the mountain to her coffee farm. She raised us seven children by growing everything that we needed. The kids helped her to grow, pick, clean, wash, dry, grind, and sell the coffee beans.
She worked long and hard for us to have a better life. She had a big vision for us. (especially focused on education)
My mother taught me more than I learned in the University. She only had two years of school. She learned from life.
