Remembering Hon. Patricia P. Satterfield '77, '05HON
| |
The St. John’s Law community mourns the loss of Hon. Patricia Satterfield, who helped to establish the Law School’s Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights in 1999 to explore issues affecting the lives of underrepresented people, increase the racial and socioeconomic diversity of the legal profession, and educate law students to be leaders on issues of racial, economic, and social justice.
The ongoing work of the Ron Brown Center reflects Justice Satterfield’s lifelong commitment to serving the greater good and uplifting others. It was a commitment forged growing up in segregated Middlesex County, VA. After graduating from St. John’s, Justice Satterfield held a succession of positions in New York’s Unified Court System before making history as the first Black woman to be elected Justice of the Civil Court, City of New York. In later years, she presided as an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, 11th Judicial District, and as Justice of the Supreme Court, Queens County.
Despite the demands of public service, Justice Satterfield always made time to give back to the Law School by supporting our clinical legal program, as a member of our Alumni Association Board of Directors, and as a mentor to our students and alumni.
St. John’s Law is a better institution because Justice Satterfield called it alma mater and shared her time and talents with us, our students, and the profession we serve. We are deeply grateful to her.
After leading such a full and inspiring life, may she now rest in peace.
