UMSL community gathers to celebrate 60th anniversary of the university’s founding

UMSL Education Alumni Featured in University’s 60 for 60
Darrion Cockrell, the 2021 Missouri Teacher of the Year and UMSL COE graduate, is celebrated as one of 60 UMSL alumni who apply one or more of the university’s core values in the world and help to make it a better place. Two other Education alumni, Beth Goetz and Ketosha Harris, have also been featured so far in the year-long 60 for 60 celebration.

UMSL Education faculty and staff honored with Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence at annual State of the University Address
Chancellor Kristin Sobolik (at left) presented Chancellor’s Awards and teaching awards to College of Education faculty and staff members including Jennifer Fisher, Alina Slapac, Magen Rooney-Kron, Lindsay Athamanah, Wen Zeng, Jonathan Lidgus, Martille Elias, Marti Baricevic, April Regester, Andrew Kliethermes, Blake Schliesser, and Chris Worth. Karen Boleska, who is not pictured, was also honored. Congratulations!

UMSL’s Play Therapy Institute awarded $442,000 to expand services
In March 2023, the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund awarded the Play Therapy Institute $442,000 in funding over three years to support play therapy services. The grant will allow the Institute to provide free play therapy services to all children living in St. Louis Country with the hiring of a full-time play therapist. In addition, the funding will also go toward hiring a graduate research assistant and will provide paid internship stipends to counseling students completing their field experience at the Play Therapy Institute.

R. Rocco Cottone named Curators’ Distinguished Professor
The Board of Curators of the University of Missouri recognized Professor Rocco Cottone, elevating him to the most prestigious rank in the UM System. Cottone, professor emeritus of counseling and family therapy in the College of Education, is a renowned counselor who has previously been named a fellow by the American Counseling Association. He has published several books on counseling and psychotherapy. Cottone was previously nominated as a Curators’ Distinguished Professor in 2020.
