USCIS PREMIUM PROCESSING FEE INCREASE
USCIS Premium Processing fee increase for Faculty & Scholars goes into effect February 26, 2024.
The scholar advising team is working diligently to file H-1B’s with the fee to avoid departments having to request new checks with IPPS and incur the higher fee.

VISA APPOINTMENTS AND VISA PROCESSING WAIT TIMES
When entering the US to begin a J-1 or H-1B appointment, scholars need a valid visa (except for Canadian citizens). We have seen lengthy wait times for some embassies and consulates around the world, especially in India and China. The Department of State has estimated appointment wait times
available online - these are subject to change, but can be helpful to scholars as they make their plans. As visa processing times are not included in appointment wait times, we advise leaving an ample amount of time between the time the request is submitted to ISEO and the appointment start date, regardless of when the appointment process started in your department or other offices.

INQUIRIES ABOUT REQUESTS NOT YET SUBMITTED
Have a quick question about a scholar situation? Please make sure to include the name when you reach out to us (or let us know if you do not have one yet). This helps us make sure the correct advisor is in the loop, and lets us check our records. If you are able to include any other relevant information, such as status, dates, or appointment title, this is also very helpful!

J-1 STATUS: INCIDENT REPORT
The U.S. Department of State, Office of Private Sector Administration (OPA) requests that J sponsors (such as ISEO) notify their office of any serious problem involving the J program within 24 hours of becoming aware of the situation. Please contact the ISEO scholar advisor if you are made aware of any serious incidents, such as: death or disappearance, substance abuse, bullying, harassment, serious medical issues, litigation, fraud, etc.

H-1B
We have seen an increase in OPT/STEM and J-1 bypass requests. In most cases we recommend that scholars take advantage of all time available to them, both to allow them time to build their CV in the US and as it is more economical for the department. If you have questions about a specific scholar case and other potential options before H-1B, please reach out to the assigned scholar advisor.
