On Sunday, January 8th, the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, in collaboration with the Hall family, the River Road African American Museum, and The Neighborhood Story Project, was proud to host a community tribute and interactive altar in honor of historian Gwendolyn Midlo Hall. Dr. Hall’s work has been an inspiration to generations of scholars, artists, musicians, and activists.

| Award-Winning Historian Max Krochmal Ready to Steer Justice Studies Program Into Next Phase
|
Historian Max Krochmal, the recipient of multiple national and international scholarly awards, is set to guide the University of New Orleans doctoral justice studies program into its next phase. Krochmal arrived in August following a Fulbright Fellowship in Mexico City last spring.
The justice studies program, which was approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors in 2020, offers four areas of concentrations in criminal, educational, environmental and social justice. The program will enroll its third class in the fall.

School of Education Receives Grant
|
The School of Education received a $250,000 grant from the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation. This collaboratively written grant will support the development and pilot implementation of a non-degree certification pathway for students who wish to enter the profession of education.

Apple TV+ to Air The Big Door Prize Series This Spring
|
Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel of the same name, “The Big Door Prize” tells the story of a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential.
Walsh, director for UNO's Creative Writing Workshop, will serve as a producer for the series. The book was named a semifinalist for the Thurber Literary Prize for American Humor.

History & Philosophy Visiting Professor
|
The Department of History & Philosophy and Center Austria are delighted and honored to welcome Prof. Eva Pfanzelter to the UNO community for the spring semester 2023. She is Deputy Head at the Department of Contemporary History, as well as Deputy Head of the Research Center Digital Humanities at the University of Innsbruck.
Her research specialties are Contemporary European History, Regional History, Migration History, Holocaust, Digital History and Digital Humanities. Her passion is the critical analysis at the interface of History, Digitalization, and the Public.
As a visiting professor in the History and Philosophy Department, Prof. Pfanzelter will teach two courses.

| Freedom on the Move Earns Digital Humanities Award
|
Freedom on the Move, a digital database with information on people who escaped or attempted to escape enslavement in the United States, has been awarded the 2023 Digital Humanities Award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. University of New Orleans history professor Mary Niall Mitchell is a lead historian for the digital database and director of the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies at UNO.

COLAEHD faculty and staff will gather in early February for the college's annual retreat where we will share best practices for student success, identify shared values and goals and chart our way forward with a 5-year strategic plan. The retreat will begin with a potluck lunch and conclude with a champagne toast as we raise our glasses to our future! Look for an update on the retreat in a future issue of the COLLEGE INSIDER.

University of New Orleans alumnus Maurice Carlos Ruffin’s book, “The Ones Who Don’t Say They Love You,” has been selected as the focus of One Book One New Orleans (OBONO)’s 2023 citywide reading and literacy campaign. The group selects one book every year for its campaign.

The School of Education is launching its Spring 2023 Speaker Series on February 8, 2023. The event, co-sponsored by DEI@UNO and in connection with Black History Month, is titled "Supporting Black Students in New Orleans: Perspectives of Educational Leaders.” Five panelists will share their insights on how we can impact the success of Black students in the New Orleans area.
This event is open to the campus and community and will be held in the Homer L. Hitt Alumni Center from 6:30 to 7:45 pm.
