Valor Arts presents: Little Women!

With the opening of Little Women, Valor Arts+Media ushers in a new tradition – the Valor Summer Musical. Traditionally, Valor has only performed a musical once a year, in the spring, but as our Arts+Media program has grown, our desire is to offer expanded performance opportunities to more students. Production Director Kurt Muenstermann expressed the arts team’s excitement well: “With over 100 students involved in the Performing Arts arm of the Conservatory and with the wealth of student talent at Valor in general, we are thrilled to be able to get more students involved, either on stage or crewing for this new production.”

This show was made possible through Valor Arts Guild giving, and the arts team is deeply grateful to the Guild for their generosity and desire to serve our students in their pursuit of creative excellence for Christ!

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, the musical Little Women follows the adventures of four sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March, as they grow up in Civil War America. Little Women is an enchanting, timeless tale with delightful music and vocals that will bring the audience an evening filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit.

Alumni Highlights: Valor's (not so little) Women

Valor Arts Alumni make their mark in professional circles throughout creative industries.

Grace Under Pressure

Grace Osborne (2018) is studying theatre at the American Musical Theatre in New York City. Always poised and charging forward (in high heels), Grace had her first Broadway show audition last year for Frozen.  The casting team did a double-take when her audition sheet indicated she was 18 years old, despite being poised and perfect for the part of Anna. Grace tells us her experience and how they tested her mettle during the audition.

“I was a little nervous for the audition because it was my first big opportunity in the city,” she explained. “I sang my songs and then when it was time to read sides, the casting director had me do them a few different ways. She wanted me to be more care free so she had me take off one of my heels and untuck my shirt. And then she proceeded to throw her markers at me during the scene. It was good practice in staying focused (and dodging items coming at your head). This resulted in a lot of laughter and a great memory,” she smiled.

In the end, they asked Grace to come back and audition often after getting a year of New York training under her belt. They wanted to make sure they didn’t pull her into such a huge commitment too early. We know we will be seeing Grace shine on Broadway in the near future!

A talented film-maker while at Valor, Marian Bochet (2017) continues to pursue her craft with flair! She is in the Documentary Journalism program at University of Missouri and using the summers to intern with production companies.  Last summer she interned at Contrast Visuals, in Nashville, where she worked on their social media platform, collaborated on several film projects and was a production assistant of several music videos and commercials. “I got to meet Ezra Cohen,” exclaimed Marian. “He is a well-known filmmaker who directs and produces amazing music videos for big artists and bands.  I learned so much from him and about set life and what to expect in the industry, and I made a lot of priceless connections.”

One of the projects Marian worked as a production assistant was Christian artist’s Riley Clemmons music video for her song, “Hold On”, directed by Ezra Cohen.  Watch it here. Great work Marian!

Arts and Athletics: New JV Poms!

With a unique collaboration between Arts and Athletics, Poms has built a bridge between what are often thought of two very separate co-curriculars through Competitive Dance. After this last year's success, with Valor's Varsity Competitive Dance team, such as placing seventh at Nationals, the program has grown to include a new JV program this upcoming school year. Leading the JV program is Valor Poms alum and Arts+Media Assistant, Natalie Jackson, along with our Freshman Conservatory Dance teacher Briana Odell. The team has already danced at UDA camp this summer (as pictured above), gone on a team retreat in Breckenridge, and is looking forward to supporting Valor's spirited culture at various events. The team will compete at JV League November 6th, JV State on November 23rd and two more in January so come out and support them!
