INNOVATING FOR SENIORS: TOVERTAFEL
A group of loyal donors teamed up with the Warm Hearth Foundation and staff from Kroontje Center and Showalter Center to bring Tovertafel to our residents in health care residences. You may recall, Tovertafel is a serious game system developed for individuals with memory or intellectual disabilities. An excellent connection to our heritage, Tovertafel means ‘Magic Table’ in Dutch. Developers aim to unlock memorable moments and enhance quality of life through purposeful play.
A year after the first system was introduced at the Village, those responsible for life enrichment programs share that residents are actively engaged with Tovertafel in a variety of ways including interactive games with props, simple light and music during quiet times and as a partner in helping reduce anxiety for those with dementia. “Residents are completely entranced by it. It is so fun and brings lots of smiles,” says Corynne Emerson, Life Enrichment Director at Showalter Center.
Thank you to all who helped us bring this innovative program to Warm Hearth.

FALL INTO HEALTHY EATING HABITS
As the crisp air of fall arrives, it’s the perfect time to embrace seasonal foods that can boost your health and well-being. Autumn brings a variety of delicious and nutritious options, like apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and squash, which are rich in vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Enjoy a warm bowl of butternut squash soup or roasted root vegetables to support your immune system and keep your digestion on track. Incorporating these seasonal foods not only adds flavor to your meals but also provides nutrients that help protect against common colds and seasonal illnesses.
Additionally, fall is a great time to enjoy hearty, whole-grain dishes like oatmeal, quinoa, and barley, which are ideal for maintaining steady energy levels and keeping you full longer on cooler days. Pair them with some seasonal fruits like pears or cranberries for added flavor and nutrition. Embrace the flavors of fall!
