As I have gotten older, I have worked hard to avoid using the phrase, “Kids today” before starting any sentence.  That phrase brings up images of my crotchety grandfather telling me that he walked to school 30 miles each day in the snow...going uphill... both ways.  But for this piece, I am starting with “kids today.”

“Kids today”, especially your kids here at Central should be celebrated.  

“Kids today” are taking their ability to attend school much more seriously and with way more determination than they have in the past.  Following COVID protocols every day with very little complaining so they can do their part to keep the school open and running is what “kids today” are doing.  

Finding new and innovative ways to help support and connect with each other is something “kids today” do more easily than ever before.  I met with a group of students this morning who are working to create an online tutoring platform so struggling students can get free tutoring from their peers in the building.  

“Kids today”  are more aware and accepting of the differences each individual brings to a community and celebrate that diversity is a good thing.  “Kids today” realize that diversity isn’t just based on skin color, gender or sexual orientation, but includes financial stability, access to resources, and prior knowledge.  “Kids today” work to find ways to include these students in activities and learning opportunities.

“Kids today” are much more flexible and fluid in their thinking and can adapt to a changing landscape much easier than we ever could.

“Kids today”  are more knowledgeable and empathetic to world issues than any other group before them.  

“Kids today”  dream of a better world and do not feel like they cannot impact this world in a positive way.

Dear Central High School Staff, Parents, and Students,

We are excited to announce that the Riverside Educational Center is launching its after-school tutoring and enrichment program at CHS this year!  We are committed to providing academic as well as social and emotional support to students at Central this year. We hope that this email will allow us to introduce our program and all that we provide.  

Who we are: 
Riverside Educational Center provides structured tutoring and diverse extra-curricular
activities in the after-school hours for academically and/or financially qualifying K-12th
grade students

What we do: 
-Provide small group tutoring services to keep high school students on track to graduate.
-Engage in quality enrichment activities, such as yoga,hiking, biking, art, and more.
-Provide quality outdoor programming through activities such as raft and camping trips.
-Support students in post-secondary planning to ensure that each high school student has a plan upon graduating high school.
-Identify opportunities for students to have an impact on their community through our Youth Leaders program
-Host a Summer Program with various trips to the outdoors that include, biking, hiking,camping, rock climbing, and others

Tuesday-Thursday: 3:15-5:30pm.

We provide support for those that need it most and REC authentically cares about it’s community. Our organization is not only centered around tutoring but also providing quality enrichment as well as diverse Social Emotional learning, outdoor programming, post-secondary support, and community involvement opportunities.
