Osher staff and volunteers are busy planning our upcoming fall term offerings of classes, lecture series, special events, and Lunch & Learn webinars.

Save the date for fall registration which opens at 9:00 am on August 21. Our annual Red Butte Garden open house and instructor previews will be held August 24 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with a complimentary continental breakfast and free admission to the garden. We will once again collect school supply donations for local children in need. Invite friends or neighbors to join you because an Osher membership is not required! Over 120 fall classes will begin on September 21 and run through November 18. Classes will be posted on our website in early August, and our fall brochure is about to go to print and come directly to your home mailbox. More information will be coming soon!

Each week, Marcie's Movie Club will watch and then discuss a film at Salt Lake Film Society's Broadway Centre Cinemas-SLC's home for independent film. There will be a 1:45 intro, 2:00 film, and a short discussion afterwards. Films will be recently released titles representing a variety of genres, including big-name, independent, documentary, and international titles.
The class fee covers a movie ticket each week. If a class must be missed, club members will be offered complimentary tickets to watch the film or another one on their own at another time. LIMITED, validated parking in the garage next to Broadway - in between Copper Onion and Copper Common - is available on a first come, first served basis. Osher members will connect with one another over independent, first-run cinema, as well as with their fellow global citizens through documentary and international films. As Roger Ebert noted, movies are an empathy machine!

The ground tucked behind houses and businesses on 800 East Street, below 400 South Street, used to be a sunken vacant lot, covered with weeds. Now it is an outstanding, unique sculpture garden in the city. Gilgal Garden is the legacy of Thomas Child's drive to give physical form to his deeply held beliefs, expressed through the original sculptural arrangements and more than 70 engraved stones. It is the only identified Visionary Art Environment in Utah.

Join us for a delightful afternoon of tea, conversation, and laughter inspired by The Dalai Lama's Cat: The Art of Purring. Through the charming adventures of one very wise cat, we'll explore timeless themes of kindness, gratitude, compassion, and finding joy in everyday life. No knowledge of Buddhism is needed, and even if you haven't read the book, you're warmly welcome. Come as you are, enjoy good company, and leave feeling inspired, refreshed, and connected.

This discussion-based event will meet at Christ United Methodist Church in Millcreek. This church has one of only two exact replicas of Michelangelo's Pieta in North America. We will begin by talking about Michelangelo himself. Then we will look at the Pieta, some beautiful stained-glass windows of the Wasatch mountains, and other art done by members and staff.

Did you know we start losing muscle as early as age 30 and this accelerates after 60? This loss impacts balance, mobility, bone density, and independence. The good news? Strength training can help reverse that trend. Join us for a FREE dynamic session on how building strength supports better health, sharper cognition, and improved quality of life as we age. You'll learn science-backed strategies to safely get started (and stick with it!) - plus enjoy a short demonstration and time for Q&A.

Join the Osher Booker Book Group for our August meeting as we discuss June/July's book selection, The Luminaries (2013) by Eleanor Catton. The novel examines the world of shipping, banking, and the gold rush in 1800's New Zealand. At 800 pages, we need two months to read it! We meet monthly at the Osher Building to discuss the previous month's book selection. Everyone is welcome. Perhaps we are "novel" in that we actually discuss the book! Next meeting (September), we will discuss The Life of Pi (2002) by Yann Martel.
Please note: Registration is required for each month's meeting you plan to attend.

New! Osher Special Events Club — Join the Conversation
|
Osher members are invited to a new monthly gathering designed to spark ideas, build connections, and help shape future Osher special events. This informal gathering is an opportunity for members to come together, share ideas, and collaborate on creative possibilities for future Osher events. Following our discussion, we’ll take a leisurely stroll through Red Butte Garden together. Future meetings may rotate to other Osher partner locations and wonderful places that Osher members can enjoy through their membership benefits. Whether you love brainstorming, planning, or simply connecting with fellow lifelong learners, we’d love to have you join us. No registration needed, please just show up and have fun!

Osher Online Community Event
Beyond the Pitch: Stories from the 2026 FIFA World Cup
|
We are delighted to share our upcoming community event: Beyond the Pitch: Stories from the 2026 FIFA World Cup presented by Anders Kelto.
The FIFA World Cup is more than the world's largest sporting event. It is a global gathering that brings together people, cultures, and traditions from every corner of the world. Award-winning journalist Anders Kelto has been traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada, documenting the experiences of fans and exploring the stories that unfold beyond the matches.
Kelto will share memorable encounters with fans from around the world, examine the history and global significance of the World Cup, discuss the opportunities and challenges facing FIFA, and explore how international sporting events shape cultural exchange, national identity, and our understanding of one another.
Osher Online community events are free and available to all members of participating Osher Online Institutes.
