Meet our team!
Each month we portray a member of our amazing team. Today, Rebecca Massey, the director of the Adult Literacy Program.
I have been with Literacy Together since August 2018.
Things I'd love to learn in my lifetime: In terms of knowledge: more about dog behavior, the history of philosophy, Black and Indigenous U.S. history, dark matter. In terms of skills: basic car maintenance, how to hold my breath underwater for longer, how to run (and enjoy it).
My favorite things to do are: Playing with my dog, sleeping, reading, laughing.
My favorite quote: Too many to pick one, but I love stanza 4 from Anne Sexton's "Admonitions to a Special Person."
Watch out for intellect,
because it knows so much it knows nothing
and leaves you hanging upside down,
mouthing knowledge as your heart
falls out of your mouth.
What I like best about Literacy Together: It helps me to live with purpose, in service to other people. I see tutors and students form life-changing partnerships every day. I have six co-workers who are absolutely themselves, who are determined to make the world a more equitable place, and who have very different skills to contribute to that mission. Our differences make us stronger and better people.
