SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS: ENVISION PROJECT FAIR

The ECE Department recently participated in the Envision Project Fair, an annual event for high school students that gives them exposure to the various fields of engineering.
Envision, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers, is a great opportunity for the high school students to develop a better understanding of the different engineering majors and help them determine their career paths. ECE's hands-on courses displayed their various models and project prototypes, including the popular pinball machines (ECE 115: Rapid Prototyping.) Attendees also helped themselves to fun giveaways - mini SunGods and hearts - made by the 3D printers in MakerSpace (ECE 5: Making, Breaking & Hacking Stuff.) One high school student jammed on a guitar and impressed her peers using a pedal that rendered guitar audio effects (ECE 196: Project-in-a-Box)!

UC San Diego hosts 2017 ITA Workshop

The annual ITA workshop took place this year at the Catamaran Resort from Sunday, February 12th through Friday, February 17th. UC San Diego invited ITA experts from UT Austin, Stanford, Microsoft, and Human Longevity Inc. The 500+ participants enjoyed technical talks on quantum computing, genomics & big data, machine learning to name a few. They also were able to partake in inspired conversations on interactive data exploration and algorithms in nature.
The ITA workshop also held a cooking competition, a kite flying demonstration, several networking events, sunset cruise and graduate poster demonstrations.

ECE Distinguished Alumni series: An Accidental Engineer and the End of Underground Nuclear Testing

Dr. Dan Chang shared his experiences of his earlier years at UC San Diego and how he became interested in electromagnetic theory.  At Sandia National Laboratories, he used this background to evaluate the safety of nuclear weapons and contributed to US/USSR verification on restrictions on nuclear tests.  These efforts eventually stopped the underground nuclear testing and reduced nuclear stockpiles for the US and USSR.

Women in ECE seminar series

Graduate Women in ECE have planned a series of talks with successful engineers from industry to give some insights on how to pursue successful engineering careers. The first talk featured Catherine Noble at Raytheon on February 17th. Follow WECE here.

Research Highlights

Summer Research Internship Program

The ECE Department is very pleased to announce an exciting new Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) for continuing ECE undergraduate and graduate students. This new program will launch in the winter of 2017 with independent study activities, and will culminate with 10 weeks of summer research.
ECE Summer Research Internships will be in labs where interns will have the opportunity to observe and participate in the research activities of a research group under the supervision of the PI or another member of the research team. The program includes an enrichment component for students consisting of workshops on research communication, research writing and other pertinent topics. In addition, undergraduate students are required to present their work at the Summer Research Conference on August 17, 2017.
Research interns selected for this program will receive a summer stipend in the amount of $5000.
