Mongan Reflections: Celebrating the CTEU and Dr. Andrew Chan
| |
As we collectively embrace glimmers of hope for a future “new normal,” we continue to experience the impact of COVID in many areas of our lives and work, and on our experience of community. Despite many challenges, throughout the pandemic, each of Mongan’s centers has continued to be remarkably productive. However, it has been more difficult to engage in conversations that are not linked to specific tasks, and especially, to share successes and accomplishments. To this end, this January Reflection begins a series highlighting the extraordinary work of Mongan’s research centers.
There are many reasons to start with the Clinical Translational Epidemiology Unit (CTEU). As highlighted in this month’s update, we are thrilled that Dr. Andrew Chan, Chief of the CTEU has been appointed the Daniel K. Podolsky Professorship of Medicine. Dr. Chan services as Chief of the CTEU at Mongan and as Director of Cancer Epidemiology in the Mass General Cancer Center. This prestigious endowed professorship recognizes Dr. Chan’s preeminence in clinical and translational research in gastroenterology, excellence in mentoring the next generation of clinical investigators and leadership in his field. Among national and international recognitions include Dr. Chan’s appointment to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Board of Scientific Advisors and to lead the Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) Multinational Gastric Cancer Interception Research Team.
Closer to home, the CTEU represents an anchor in the Mongan Institute’s mission spanning the arc of translational research from population-based data science to health care delivery science--with the goal of improving the lives of people with complex needs and advancing health equity. Under Dr. Chan’s watch, the CTEU has grown to 18 faculty, 15 postdoctoral fellows, 5 MD or Ph.D. students, and 28 staff members. Since January 2020, CTEU faculty and fellows have received commitments for nearly $82 million in grant funding from diverse sources, including the NIH, Stand Up to Cancer, the American Cancer Society, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the American Gastroenterological Association. CTEU faculty and fellows published 125 publications from January 1, 2020-June 30, 2021.
Core to the mission of the CTEU is the development of the next generation of clinical translational epidemiology team scientists. In addition to longstanding areas of focus in the CTEU, junior faculty of the CTEU are pursuing new and innovative frontiers. Examples include disparities in cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition, lifestyle, stress, diabetes, HIV, breast cancer, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, asthma, obstructive lung disease. Examples of novel methods include genetic, biochemical, metabolomic, proteomic, microbial biomarkers, genome-wide association studies, mobile epidemiology, epigenomics, and community-based translational research. For more on the exciting work of the CTEU see https://www.mghcteu.org/). In the meantime, please join us in a virtual celebration of Dr. Chan’s appointment to the Daniel K. Podolsky Professorship February 16th at 5pm via Zoom. (https://partners.zoom.us/j/83772191051). I hope to see you there!
