Community Service Runs Deep for Mason Athletes

The fall brings crisp days with students energetically going to class and thrilling athletic events. Mason student-athletes work hard in the classroom and on the court, field, or pool. However, they find time to give back to the community that cheers them on. From Mason Lacrosse distributing food to the unhoused with FACETS and preparing care packages for Grace's Love to Mason Baseball joining the students at Daniels Run Elementary School for their field day, Mason athletic teams are making winning plays for the community. Follow @MasonAthleticCR on X to keep up with the impact our student-athletes are making.

New Center for Child and Teen Testing and Evaluation Launched

Mason's School of Psychology launched the Coordinated Educational and Wellness Services (CEWS) center. It will specialize in mental health, psychological, and educational testing services for children, adolescents, and teens, ages 5 to 18. The goal of these services is to improve the emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning of children in primary and secondary schools.
Graduate students in the School of Psychology will conduct testing under the close supervision of licensed clinical and school psychologists affiliated with the university. Parents get the benefit of two sets of eyes on all work conducted in the center, said Nicole Beadles, associate professor in the School of Psychology, who manages the center. “Our goal is to provide accurate and useful information that can make a difference in a child’s life,” Beadles added. Alumnus Looks to the Stars with NASA Internship

Since childhood, Ricky Chang, BA ’23 had a fascination with space exploration and media production. This summer he got the opportunity to fuse his childhood passions with his career aspirations at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a Commercialization, Innovation and Synergies Office (CIS) intern.
CIS finds government and industry partners to work with on space research and exploration.“NASA sets the policy, while private industry advances the technology,” Chang explained. “CIS helps the aerospace community to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and—hopefully—want to be a part of it.”

Mark E. Smith, Executive Director, State Government Relations
A Legacy of Impacting Generations of Future Patriots
After nearly 45 years of service to the Commonwealth of Virginia and over 10 years at Mason, Mark E. Smith, Executive Director of State Government Relations is retiring at the conclusion of the Fall 2023 semester. His career began as an intern in the Lieutenant Governor’s Office in the summer of 1979. The 2023 Virginia General Assembly session was the 44th one in which he served.
He serves as the chief liaison between Mason and entities of the Commonwealth, including elected and appointed officials in the executive and legislative branches and numerous state agencies that interface with various University offices. In concert with the University’s leadership team, he facilitates the establishment of the University’s legislative priorities and plans and executes strategies to advance Mason’s agenda year-round in Richmond.
Mark’s advocacy led to significant progress for Mason including significant increases in state financial aid packages for students, transformational capital projects for Mason’s campuses, and increases in compensation and operating funds.
“Mark’s work has helped so many needy and worthy students and is a legacy that will help generations of students that come to Mason,” said Paul Liberty, Vice President of Government and Community Relations.
“I’m quite proud of the budget victories, against ALL odds, that secured construction funding for Petersen Hall, Horizon Hall and the Life Sciences and Education Building,” Smith reminisced. “On a related matter, serving on the team that helped ensure that Mason was at the table and an active participant in the Amazon HQ2 project is something that I will carry with me."
He’s looking forward to spending more time with his wife and children. He’ll also spend his newfound free time tending to his apple orchard, raising oysters, and managing his bee hives.
