Beginning today, Thursday, March 12, the Cleveland Institute of Art will observe new hours and building access as we continue to do what we can to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic as recommended by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. Please read this memo thoroughly, as it will have an impact on every member of the CIA community.

ACCESS TO INSTRUCTIONAL SPACES

The academic building will be open to faculty, staff, students and the public during the following hours:

Thursday, March 12
7am–10pm
Friday, March 13
7am–10pm
Saturday, March 14
7am–10pm
Sunday, March 15
noon–10pm
Monday, March 16
7am–10pm
Tuesday, March 17
7am–10pm

During these times, students may retrieve any projects and materials from their studios. They will also be able to return equipment from equipment checkout. Access to the building on these days will be only through Entrance C (near the Peter B. Lewis Theater).

Beginning Wednesday, March 18, the academic building will not be accessible to students in order to minimize risk to the community. Only faculty and staff will have access, and the hours will be 7am–6pm Monday through Friday. Access will be limited to Entrance B (adjacent to the faculty parking lot). The building will be closed on weekends.

Student key card access will be turned off for the duration of the closure, which could extend beyond April 6 if the health emergency situation requires it. Students, faculty and staff should check their CIA email regularly.

Library, Fabrication Studios and the Digital Output Center

Faculty and staff will have access to the library, fabrication studios, equipment checkout, and the DOC for instructional purposes. Hours for those facilities may change, however. For up-to-date schedules for those spaces, check the following pages on myCIA.

RESIDENCE HALLS

As we noted in the March 10 memo, CIA’s resident students are strongly encouraged to return home to their permanent residence if it is possible to do so. However, the residence halls will remain open. Resident students have received an email requesting information about their plans.

Mail and Packages

Beginning immediately, students are asked not to have packages sent to CIA, as they will not have access to the mail room to retrieve them March 18 and after. Packages that arrive after this time will be held until the building is reopened. Packages can be retrieved on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17 only, between 8:30am and 4pm.
Letter mail for students living in CIA’s residence halls will be picked up by staff and delivered to the residence halls.

We are acutely aware of the challenges that these new restrictions present. We believe our first responsibility must be to guard public health and safety to the best of our abilities. I ask your patience and understanding as we continue to tackle the many questions we face, including course delivery and graduation, human resources, fulfilling our obligations to external partners and more. And again, please check your CIA email frequently for cohort-specific communications.
Updates are posted on the CIA website at cia.edu/healthalerts.
Thank you.
