Yow wazzup?! I am Niah Tangpuz, a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace engineering. On campus, I live in Howard Hall (literally the best dorm ever!). I am an international student who was born and raised in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, I have undertaken various leadership roles. Over the past year, I served as one of the associate directors for the largest NGO, guiding underprivileged Filipino scholars in their applications to prestigious international universities. Additionally, I annually lead an NGO in organizing a feeding program, distributing clothes and books to support prisoners and orphanages. At Notre Dame, I actively engage in leadership roles. I am a leader in the outreach committee for Galvin Scholars, and in the past, I served as the building manager at LaFortune Student Center. On the academic front, I have been accepted into a NASA funded research project focused on Drone Response, scheduled to commence next semester. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity and hope for a successful outcome.
Over the past two summers, Galvin generously supported me with funding for housing during my on and off-campus internships. Last summer, my journey led me to Doosan Enerbility Corporation and the Notre Dame Turbomachinery Laboratory, where I embraced the role of a mechanical engineering intern. My tasks included contributing to the assembly of a multiaxial compressor and integrating advanced wiring systems for subsequent laboratory testing. Working alongside talented mechanical and aerospace engineers made the internship not just insightful but incredibly enjoyable. Initially, as the only girl in our test cell, I hesitated to voice my opinions. However, I discovered my place in this environment, gradually gaining confidence to actively participate in team meetings, sharing my thoughts and suggestions. I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from Galvin, which enabled me to partake in this enriching experience. Looking ahead, I aspire to follow in my father's footsteps and secure a role as an engineer designer. In this role, I aim to channel my creativity into crafting modern aircraft designs with a keen focus on sustainability. I know the challenges of getting internship positions and job positions in the engineering industry due to my citizenship status but I remain hopeful and optimistic that with the help of Notre Dame alums, Galvin and God I can land a job where it aligns with my purpose in life.

Students selected for the program take a one-credit course in the spring semester of their first year which focuses on understanding the challenges marginalized communities face and provides a framework for encountering people in those communities. The research laboratory of Dr. Noah M. Hahn MD (ND '94) within the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute (GBCI) in Baltimore, Maryland, is again accepting applications for summer research interns for the summer of 2024. The GBCI is a first-of-its-kind organization founded in 2014 with the sole mission to eradicate bladder cancer through better understanding of its molecular underpinnings, improved treatment outcomes, and heightened public and patient awareness. The Hahn lab focuses on novel epigenetic diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to improve outcomes of patients and families affected by bladder cancer. Over the course of the paid 12-week experience, research interns will be introduced to basic laboratory techniques (cell culture, MTT assessment, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, Western blot, etc.) commonly used in medical research labs throughout the world, observe the medical and surgical care of bladder cancer patients, and complete a primary research project of their own.
This internship provides a unique opportunity for research interns to be exposed to multiple leaders in the bladder cancer research community at one of the world’s most esteemed academic medical institutions. No prior research experience is required. Applicants currently in their junior year of undergraduate studies or beyond who intend to pursue medical school training or primary medical research based graduate programs are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should send a personal statement (1-page maximum) with their resume or CV. Finalists for the positions will be notified by January 19, 2024 and virtual interviews will be planned in the late January to early February 2024 time frame according to each student’s availability.
