The International Council of Museums [ICOM] is a global museum network, a membership association and non-governmental organization which establishes professional and ethical standards for museums. It has many committees and Dr. Steele was recently elected to the Costume Committee.

OBJECT OF THE MONTH
Apartamento 03's Ouro (Gold) collection from 2023 pays tribute to the economic activity of Black Brazilian women who sold sweets and other foods for the gold required to purchase the freedom of enslaved people. This look is one of a number of new acquisitions. We appreciate our donors.

Join Randy Cohen and Dr. Elizabeth Way, MFIT curator of costume and accessories, for a live podcast recording of their conversation about the exhibition Art X Fashion. Cohen’s podcast Person Place Thing is an interview show based on the idea that people are most captivating when they talk not about themselves but rather about something they love. For this episode, Dr. Way will discuss three particularly meaningful objects featured in the exhibition and how they reflect the complex relationship between fashion and fine art.

The Enduring Legacy of Utilitarian Design Era

Join us for a lively panel discussion with fashion scholars, each of whom will speak to a different facet of utilitarian-inspired dress. Expanding upon the themes of the MFIT exhibition Beyond Utility, scholars Sonya Abrego, Mae Colburn, and Charles McFarlane will explore the topics of military, workwear, and craft in fashion and share their relationship to utilitarian dress. The talk will be moderated by FIT professor Dr. Hilary Davidson.

| Art X Fashion Symposium

MFIT's 35th symposium is planned in conjunction with the exhibition Art X Fashion. The history of fashion's entangled relationship with the world of fine art has many points of convergence, from art as fashion inspiration, to fashion's presentation in art spaces, to artists utilizing garment forms. Speakers include fashion designer Christian Francis Roth, Dr. Émilie Hammen, director of Palais Galliera, Paris, and Dr. Alexandra Schwartz, curator of modern and contemporary art, craft, and design at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD).

Art X Fashion looks at the entangled and shifting relationship between fine art and fashion – typically considered a "decorative" or "applied" art. Organized by Dr. Elizabeth Way, curator of costume and accessories, this exhibition features 140 garments, textiles, and accessories from MFIT's permanent collection, and we invite viewers to consider the much-asked question, "Is fashion art?" through historic and contemporary examples. Beyond Utility, curated by graduate students in the MA Fashion and Textile Studies program in collaboration with The Museum at FIT, examines the transformation of utilitarian garments within and beyond the fashion system, pairing archetypal workwear, military dress, and craft traditions with their later reinterpretations. The exhibition showcases never-before-displayed objects from the MFIT Study Collection and the FTS Graduate Study Collection. Learn more.

This is MFIT's ninth collaborative workshop that brings together students and faculty from higher education institutions around the globe. For this year's project, students from the Fashion Institute of Technology (USA), Universidad de Monterrey (Mexico), and LaSalle College of the Arts (Singapore) used MFIT's 2025 exhibition Dress, Dreams, and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis as a springboard. Special Exhibitions Gallery
This exhibition will explore the ways in which dolls have influenced fashion and dressed appearance. Doll dressing takes many forms, ranging from the appeal of youthful baby doll dresses, to the 2D quality of "paper doll" looks, to the influence of creepy dolls on fashion. It encompasses clothing and accessories, hair and makeup, and even movement and gestures that take their cue from dolls. Learn more.
