The Spring Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday, March 6, at Stauffer-Flint Hall. A plethora of organizations connected to multimedia journalism, digital marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, sports media and media arts plan to participate. A professional photographer will be available to take LinkedIn portraits between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Resource Center. A resume breakout room is also available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Wooldridge Room on the second floor for students to have their resume reviewed by a professional.

Emergency fund application now available: Current JMC students experiencing a financial emergency can apply for one-time grants up to $500. The funding does not have to be repaid. Information about what qualifies as an emergency and the application can be found here.

Award-winning filmmaker and producer visits class: Micah Brown, a documentary filmmaker and producer with multiple Emmy awards, visited with students in JMC 330 (Sports Media in the 21st Century) last week. He is the principal director and owner of the production company Second Wind Creative. He's worked on the Coach Prime docuseries, the Netflix Sign Stealer documentary and many more critically acclaimed documentaries.
In a question-and-answer session with students, he discussed how to break into the field, crucial lessons he's learned throughout his career and much more. View more photos.
JMC 430 hosts pair of guest speakers: Jenn Rodgers and Trae Straziscar from the NCAA’s Media Coordination and Statistics department spoke with students in JMC 430 (Communicating Sports Information) last week. They shared with students about their career journey in sports information and communication, the duties they perform for the national office and the resources they provide for more than 1,000 NCAA member schools.
JMC School hosts Harding Fellows: The Fellows toured the KU campus and met with faculty from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications to help prepare them for their upcoming experience as graduate students. Professor Hyunjin Seo, Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon and Graduate Program Jammie Johnson presented to the Fellows during their visit. Associate Dean for Student Success Scott Reinardy also led a discussion with the Fellows. Learn more about the visit and the students here and here.
Royals broadcaster visits JMC School: At the request of the KU Jewish Business Club, Kansas City Royals pre-game and post-game broadcaster Joel Goldberg spoke to about 40 Business School and Journalism and Mass Communications students, offering career and life advice.

Apply for Creativity & Culture in Rome by the end of today (March 3): The program focuses on helping students develop the ability to immerse, observe, understand and connect with people and culture in context. In addition to structured, ethnographic exploration, the program includes a series of collaborative group intensive creative workshops. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students sophomore level and above with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Apply online here.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting was a keynote speaker at the Nebraska Environmental Education Conference. Schlichting’s presentation, “Reconnecting with the Earth Through Indigenous Storytelling,” explores environmentalism through the transformative lens of Indigenous storytelling. Through her documentary work and personal experiences, she emphasizes the importance of narrative sovereignty as a means to foster deeper connections with the Earth, each other and all living energies.
Doctoral student Rim Chaif and Assistant Professor Christopher Etheridge co-authored an article "Misogyny Was in the Atmosphere: Feminist Perspectives on Social Media Use in the 2019 Algerian Pro-Democratic Demonstrations," that has been published in Social Media + Society. This article explores how feminist activists used social media during the 2019 protests, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges they faced in digital activism. Read the full article.

School of Business hosting summit for KU students March 7: The School of Business Impact Program team is hosting IDEALS, a summit for all KU students aimed to bring students together through workshops, networking and panel discussions to view access, belonging, respect and success through numerous lenses in their professional lives. This summit will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 7 at Capitol Federal Hall. There is no cost to attend, and meals will be provided. Students can register here.
The Big Event at KU is a long-standing tradition that fosters a spirit of service and connection between the University of Kansas and the Lawrence community. Thousands of volunteers – students, faculty, and staff – contribute their time at hundreds of local job sites across Lawrence semesterly. This bi-annual event serves as a tangible expression of our gratitude to the community that supports us throughout the year.
The Big Event is fast approaching on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.! All volunteers will be eligible to earn four community service hours for their participation. Volunteers can register as individuals or as a group. To register a group, please contact tbe@ku.edu with your group name.

On Friday, March 7, the Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board (SAB) will be hosting its third Pizza and Politics event of the semester! The presentation, “Navigating the Collegiate Landscape of Name, Image, and Likeness,” will feature College Sports Law Attorney (and former Division I basketball player) Mit Winter as well as Assistant Professor of Health, Sport, and Exercise Science Nataliya Bredikhina. Stop by for free pizza at the Jayhawk Ink room on the second floor of the Kansas Union at 12 p.m.
