But First...Let Me Practice Self-Care
As you really get into the swing of classes and life at Miami, you might be feeling overwhelmed with homework, personal stress, work, and/or extracurricular obligations. That’s absolutely normal! However, it’s important to keep your well-being in mind and take time for self-care.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is any activity you can do to keep yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. It can be anything from talking to a counselor at the Student Counseling Center, to watching your favorite Netflix show after a long day, or working out at the Rec Center. To showcase some ways to practice self-care, this week we are highlighting Dr. Steve Large, Assistant Vice President for Student Life, and Rae Moro, an upper-class student on campus.

Assistant Vice President for Student Health & Wellness

Role on Campus: "I provide oversight for the offices of Student Counseling, Student Health, and Student Wellness. Basically, I want students to see my role as a connector, advocate, and promoter of holistic health."

How do you practice self-care? "The beauty of self-care is that it is personal and versatile. Sometimes self-care for me looks like reality TV and Chipotle, and sometimes it looks like long walks and chats with a soulmate friend. Personally, meditation is also a great source of self-care (the app Buddhify is a favorite). And there’s something about nature that is always soothing to the spirit.

What are some tips you have for students in their own practice of self-care?
  1. "Adjusting to college can be uncomfortable at times, but discomfort can actually be an indicator that you are growing and are right where you are supposed to be.Try to embrace and celebrate discomfort and not over-interpret it."
  2. "Practice self-love and self-affirmation. Your thoughts are so powerful."
  3. "This might sound basic or cliche, but sleep and nutrition are very important. Be aware of what you are putting into your body and how much sleep you are getting- it can have a big impact on your overall health, particularly your mental health."
  4. "Fight the urge to isolate, and connect with others in real-time and face-to-face."
  5. "Try to find routines and rhythms. Structure can be helpful, so create it where you can."

How do you practice self-care? Self-care for me usually looks like physical activity. Rugby is the main way that I can relieve stress and release all the pent up frustrations of my academic and social spheres. Rugby provides a very aggressive yet structured time frame where I can let it all go. That being said, I am an executive board member for rugby so sometimes even my stress reliever can become stressful. Other things I like to do are weight lifting, rock climbing, and utilizing the hot tub/pool at the Rec Center. When my body says enough, I resort to self-care at home. I like to write in a journal, which often just looks like word vomit, and paint when I have some free time but, sometimes a quick nap is really all my mind and body need to get back on track.

Stop the Bleed Certifcation Class

Sign up to attend the Stop the Bleed Certification Class on October 15 at 7:00pm. Stop the Bleed aims to train and empower bystanders to fill the time gap between an active shooter situation and EMS arrival by teaching people skills to save a life.

Studies have shown that the help given by an immediate responder can often make the difference between life and death, even before medical professionals arrive. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching individuals how to provide vital initial response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations.
