Special Event: Graduate Assistantship stipend policy changes meeting with Dean Karpus
In the November 17 GradConnections, Dean Karpus addressed questions about changes to the graduate assistantship stipend policy in a memo to students
In order to provide answers to questions students might have, he would like to invite graduate students to attend a communication session planned for December 16 at 2:00 pm in 2241 Chamberlin.
If you have questions prior to the communications meeting, contact gsdean@grad.wisc.edu.

Tips for Grads

If you're planning to be around campus at all over winter break, you know how nice and quiet it can be. But you may also know that many of the resources and spaces you may use on a daily basis are also on break. There's nothing worse than showing up to the gym ready for a workout only to find it closed. Check out the winter break hours for some of the most popular resources on campus:

Recreation:
  • The SERF and Nat will be closed December 24-Jaunuary 3. They will reopen with limited hours January 4-17.
  • Still looking for a place to work out during break? The Shell is closed December 24-27 and December 30-31, but will be open the rest of break!
  • The Arboretum is open and will be hosting many events and specialized tours throughout winter break.
Also note: Student Lockers at the SERF and the Nat exipire on Wednesday, December 23. Make sure you renew or clean out your locker by then or risk a $15 fee.
Libraries & Study Spaces:
  • Many of the larger libraries around campus will have limited winter break hours. See when College Library, Memorial Library, and Ebling Library will be open.
  • Check with your program or department to find out if program offices will be closing or departmental libraries will have reduced hours over break.
Unions:
  • Memorial Union will be closed Thursday, December 24 - January 10. It will reopen on Monday, January 11 with limited hours.
  • Union South will be closed Thursday, December 24 - January 3. It will reopen on Monday, January 4 with limited hours.
GradConnections:
  • We'll be on winter break for the next 2 weeks. Check your inboxes on January 5 for the next edition!
Winter break is a great time to step off of campus and find some community resources that might fill some of these gaps. Try the Madison Central Library for a new study space or the Goodman Community Center for a low-cost, drop-in gym.
Leaders Needed for New Industry Consulting Program

A new program is being launched that would give postdocs and graduate students first-hand experience tackling real-world industry problems for Madison companies. Projects would be performed in teams of postdoc and graduate student consultants under the direction of mentors from the companies. Professional development workshops in the business skills valued by industry would also supplement the training that consultants receive.

The program is modeled on the successful PICO (Postdoc Industry Consultants) program that has been running at Medical College of Wisconsin since 2011. PICO was initiated and continues to be run by postdocs with support from a faculty advisor. More information about PICO and similar programs here.

Are you interested in being part of the leadership team that will spearhead this program at UW-Madison? If so, complete
this form and you will be contacted by the organizers about upcoming information sessions.

Alumni Profile Series: Career-Life Balance A Must
