THE MICAH'S PROGRAM: HELPING NEIGHBORS IN NEED ON OUR CAMPUS
In 2012, the Warm Hearth Foundation, in Partnership with St. Michael Lutheran Church, began a program to help combat hunger on our campus. In a matter of months the Micah’s Soup for Seniors Program grew to serve 100 households monthly. This program provides a monthly grocery distribution for any seniors residing in our HUD subsidized apartments. With the success of Soup for Seniors, we began to look for an opportunity to provide fresh produce to improve the nutritional health of our neighbors.
Micah’s Garden began with a grant that allowed us to build raised garden beds for neighbors to grow their own produce. Through a partnership with the NRV Glean Team, which harvests from local farms and works with local distributors, we have increased our produce distribution allowing us to serve neighbors throughout the year. Since the beginning of 2017, we have distributed over 6,000 pounds of fresh produce to these same residents in need.
By 2016, through partnerships in the local community, we implemented our Micah’s Personal Care Items program and are currently serving 50 residents every month. The Micah’s Program provides over $48,000 in food and supplies to residents on campus each year.

LOSING LONELINESS
An issue facing many seniors which is often overlooked is loneliness. While many older adults become homebound due to debility or illness, countless others remain in good physical health yet lack the means for regular socialization. As adults become older, their circle of friends tends to thin; family members are busy handling their own affairs and responsibilities. A spouse may pass away, leaving the senior alone in their home. Regardless of the circumstance, isolation and lack of social interaction can be detrimental to a senior’s overall health.
A study in the Perspectives on Psychological Science Journal found that one in five Americans suffers from what is known as “persistent loneliness”. This condition has been found to directly increase the risk for mortality by 29-32%.
One of several resources that can be utilized by seniors to help combat loneliness is what is known as private-duty companion services. A companion is someone who comes into a senior’s home and, as the name insinuates, acts as a companion. Companions can fill many roles, including working with an individual on a hobby or project, performing light housekeeping duties, providing transportation to and from appointments or social activities, and assisting with meal preparation.
If you or someone you know may benefit from the care of a companion, Warm Hearth at Home may be able to help! For more information, please call 540-443-3428 or visit WHVatHome.org.
