Students' Vaccination Questions Asked and Answered
In April, the Division of Student Affairs asked students via Instagram what questions they had regarding COVID-19 vaccinations.
Sac State student Nahom Semere '22 interviewed Janet Dumonchelle, Pharmacist-in-Charge, to discuss these questions and concerns, providing answers to what students want to know.
The interview is viewable above and will be shared via Instagram over the coming weeks. We encourage you to watch and share this video with students, to help and encourage them to be informed and to take advantage of this important next step towards returning to campus.

Important Information About COVID-19 Testing
Sacramento State will be offering on-going COVID-19 testing to members of the campus community.
Every week, members of our campus population will be selected to participate in COVID-19 testing. When you are selected, you will receive an email with details on making an appointment to receive your COVID-19 test.
Testing will be done by appointment only and opportunities are available for a limited time, as a new group is selected each week. We encourage you to take advantage of this no-cost COVID-19 testing.
Getting tested can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to your family, friends, and coworkers.

Taking place on April 23-24, this year’s Give Sac State Day was a huge success for the University. Every day, people just like you help to change individual lives and realize the promise of our region. When we rise together, we rise to even greater heights.
Thank you to all who participated and answered the call to support our students!
“Your generosity unified and uplifted Hornets everywhere, and you should be proud of what we have accomplished together. While the past fourteen months have been unlike any others, our students have been finding ways to advance and thrive in the face of incredible adversity and loss. Despite the challenges they faced, they used their ideas, time, and resources to help meet the community’s most pressing needs. But this was only possible because of donors like you who support their ambitions, growth, and impact. The pandemic has altered life for us all, but together, we are equipping students to thrive and build a better tomorrow," said Vice President for Advancement, Dr. Lisa Cardoza and Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Ed Mills, in a statement on behalf of President Robert S. & Jody Nelsen.
Here is how Give Sac State Day 2021 is making a difference:
- Over $98,000 raised for academic programming
- Over $75,500 raised for scholarships
- Over $41,000 raised for student support programming
- Over $32,900 raised for students’ basic needs
- From over 1,250 gifts, together, we raised over $336,000
If you missed Give Sac State Day or would like to offer further support, there is still time! Make a gift to the cause(s) you value most and help keep higher education accessible, relevant, inclusive, and student-centered.

Student Highlight: Joey Curley '21
Joey Curley, a current graduating 4th-year Business major with an emphasis in Human Resources Management, has been honored on the Dean’s Honor List every semester of his academic career. Joey is a highly involved and important member of the Sacramento State community with his co-curricular activities, as he currently serves as a resident advisor, desk attendant, COVID-19 Housing Assistant, National Residence Hall Honorary member, and member of Student Affairs Leaders of Tomorrow (SALT).
Joey was a part of this year’s Sacramento State delegation to the Student Leadership Zoom-in Conference, which encompassed all California student leaders associated with residence life, where he was selected to be the opening keynote speaker. His keynote speech addressed his experience with and growth through his resident advisor career, as well as challenges faced adapting to the pandemic. Additionally, he presented in the conference on the topic of “Don’t Think You’re Sus: Imposter Syndrome as a Student Leader” and was recognized as a Top Five Program. Joey was also instrumental in helping Sacramento State be recognized as the school winner for philanthropy for having the highest percentage of the delegation participating in the conference’s philanthropy event which recognized health care workers.
In 2020, as a part of the delegation attending the Northern Student Leadership Drive-in Conference, Joey presented on the topic of “Cookie-Cutter Boundaries” where he was honored as a Top Five Program, and an EDI Program Award Recognition for incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion. Joey’s efforts last year helped bring home to Sacramento State the Northern California spirit stick, the overall grand prize.
Joey is an aspiring Student Affairs professional and has already been offered graduate school acceptances at Pennsylvania State, Clemson University, University Nebraska-Lincoln, Indiana University Bloomington, and the University of Southern California. Joey has deferred these acceptances to Fall 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic persisting, but we look forward to Joey’s future steps in Student Affairs.

The DEGREES Project
The DEGREES Project is an educational equity program composed of students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated to Educating, Graduating, and Retaining Educational Equity Students (DEGREES). As a peer-support functioning program, the DEGREES Project coaches (students) and faculty advisors work together to provide advising, mentorship, and campus resources to our students. The mission of the DEGREES Project is to provide enhanced services to our students to make timely progress on the road to their degrees, to reduce the achievement gap, and to provide a comprehensive and integrated menu of academic and student support services in order to improve the retention and graduation of underrepresented minority (URM) and At-Promise students.

The program has been led by Peer Success Coordinator/Counselor Ruth Williams since 2019. Ruth says, “It’s an understatement to say that the work we do here at the DEGREES Project is important. DEGREES will always hold a special place with me because when I was a student at CSUS, I remember feeling lost and discouraged about the major/career path I wanted to take. Finally, I took the advice a coach sent me through Blackboard (now Canvas) and scheduled an appointment with both a coach and faculty advisor, Kristen Tudor. I feel the interactions I had with them not only helped me switch to the correct major, but they were a stepping stone that helped build me to where I am today.”
Ruth isn’t the only one who is grateful for the work of the DEGREES Project. Here’s what students have to say:
- “I believe it was one year ago where I was looking through my emails and had one about making a counseling appointment with DEGREES. I thought ‘why not?’ just to make sure I was 100% on track to graduate and to make sure I knew what to expect. It was definitely one of the best decisions I made for myself in terms of organization and preparation for Sac State.”
- “DEGREES Project gave me more guidance for my next semester choice of classes.”
- “DEGREES has helped me by being readily available and having an active presence in emails, Canvas, etcetera.”
- “DEGREES Project has helped me understand the different paths that will help me succeed to my full potential. They’ve been overall helpful and informative.”
Over the course of the pandemic and virtual learning, The DEGREES Project quickly adapted to offer students virtual programming. Students have not only had access to virtual advising, but they've also been able to connect to virtual student success workshops, and safe spaces to express their emotions in guided vent sessions. Most recently, students have been recognized through the joint DEGREES Project and
U-Mentor recognition ceremony, where students, their family, and friends were invited to join in honoring them for being “Successful Beyond Measure” this past academic year.
If you’d like to learn more about the DEGREES Project or feel that students can benefit from their services, please email Degreesproject-01@csus.edu.
You can also follow them @Degreesproject on Facebook and Instagram.
