News That Rocks

WOW... What. A. Year.

We experienced adversity and we rose up. And we Zoomed, and we got through it the only way we could - with MUSIC.

But, especially, we got through it Together. And then we figured out how to rock and play music again...six feet apart, with masks and plastic see-through partitions, but we never let the barriers, either physical or mental, stop us.  No way! We rocked on!  And we remembered how good it feels to make music again, Together.  We also learned how important our SOR community is and how Together kindness and generosity and patience are at core of the people we call our School of Rock Family. We truly thank you for helping us weather this incredible ride that has been 2020, Together.  So here's to you fam -  we wish you a healthy 2021 filled with Music, Love and ROCK & ROLL.

Happy New Year!

It's Jantacular! (like January and spectacular, you get it.)

To do our part to stop the spread, we'll be online only for lessons and groups between January 3rd and January 7th (one week only) for those students who normally attend in person.  While we are remote this first week in January take advantage of some fun activities planned with our sister locations in Northern Virginia.  Super Fun Instrument/Vocal Specific Sessions, A Chance to try Songwriting, Learn Mixing 101, Get Ahead with our Ear Training Class and, yes! What, this old thing?

Maybe you've noticed our recent sprucing up of The Mothership (what people in the know, call the rehearsal room) in our recent video posts. Our lead instructor, Brooks put in a number of hours installing lights, hanging  banners and winterizing  to create a more fun and comfortable stage to play on.  We aren't done yet but we will be looking great for our future live streams.

Show Rehearsals are Clicking!

We would typically be ready to step out onto the stage in a pre-covid world but this show season performance date is getting pushed back a little (see your recent email for details.) The good news is our Show Directors are excited to report that things are really clicking into place. Our musicians are tuning into each other and connecting through their songs whether they are getting the Led out on Mondays with the Zeppelin show, getting Pop-Punky on Tuesdays with the  Blink 182 show or just feeling Alt Good on Wednesdays.   The energy coming out of the rehearsal room has been electric!  Check out our instagram and facebook posts (click to like and follow at the bottom of this newsletter) to see some snippets of the rehearsals and shows to come.  Stay tuned for updated rehearsal schedules and show time announcements for next month.

New Rock 101 & Rookies Classes Starting This Month!

We have so many young musicians that are ready to join a group that we are adding new Rookies Program classes ( 1st and 2nd Graders) and Rock 101 Classes (Ages 7+ who are ready for lessons and more study) to our schedule in January.  Our current classes follow all the safety rules are doing so well!  They are playing with confidence and really nailing their songs. The progress is pretty amazing. If you think its time to add to the group experience to help your child go to the next level in their musical skill, let us know.  But hurry!  Space is truly limited as we keep these classes small.  Call Rose on 301-589-7625.

We are as excited about the vaccine as you are!

Safety Is Still Our Top Priority

Creating a COVID-19 safe environment has been and remains our #1 priority for students and staff when they are in the building.  We know that many of our students just want to come in person and we are doing all the safety protocols to ensure we are providing a safe environment to rock.
  • We require masks while in the building
  • All persons entering the school are given a symptom and temperature check
  • All persons entering the school immediately wash their hands and hand sanitizer is used frequently
  • We keep the number of people in our building at any given time to levels lower than required
  • We maintain social distancing at all times
  • We have barriers between vocalists and the band in our groups and a barrier is in all lessons
  • We disinfect all high touch surfaces with hospital grade disinfectant using a special misting tool that gets in every crevice, nook and cranny, and disinfect cases that our brought in by students when they arrive.
In other words, we're serious about safety!  If you think your child might do better in person, give us a call and let's give it a try.  You may also schedule a time to come see it all in person to gauge your comfort level.
Student Spotlight of the Month - Meet Steven
Steven joined School of Rock at the end of September.  His lessons instructor Knox describes him as "a really special student  with a ton of natural talent coupled  with a drive to work hard toward his goals". He is pictured here in a Led Zeppelin show rehearsal and we can't wait to hear his part in the upcoming performance.
How would you say your playing has changed since joining SoR?
Since I joined School of Rock my chord playing has gotten a lot better.  I can move between them easier now.

What are your musical influences?

Jimi Hendrix. Jimmy Page. Joe Satriani.

What do you like about School of Rock?

The teachers. Knox is a great teacher. He is very encouraging. He's been helping me with a Van Halen tapping technique that I like. The teachers in Led Zeppelin rehearsals are great too.

What advice do you have for new students?
Don't give up and try your best. Be patient, it takes time to get better. Keep it Cool!
