Message from the CECS Dean — Michael Georgiopoulos
Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to an idea started at UCF, back in Fall 2017, whose ambitious goal was the creation of an Academy of Science Engineering of Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL) with the intent of bringing together all the National Academy members that work and/or reside in the State of Florida. ASEMFL was founded in 2018 at the University of Central Florida. ASEMFL’s inaugural members (140 of them) hold the highest career distinction in the United States as members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. National Academy members who live or work in Florida have automatic membership in ASEMFL and represent universities, public agencies and private industry statewide.
ASEMFL members are committed to addressing key issues and challenges impacting Florida, from COVID-19, the environment, sustainable energy, healthcare, transportation and more, by producing cutting-edge unbiased studies. ASEMFL’s 15-member inaugural board represents Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of South Florida; 3RAM Group LLC, EOvation Advisors, LLC, Innovia, LLC, and the Optical Society of America. See the ASEMFL website for board members, their affiliations and biographies.
In ASEMFL’s First Annual Meeting, November 7, 2020, to be held virtually, ASEMFL will induct 22 new members to honor their career achievements and expand the organization’s collective expertise. The 2020 inductees were selected for their significant contributions to their fields. This is an abridged virtual meeting that includes a keynote by Dr. Leroy Hood (member of NAS, NAE and NAM) and induction of new ASEMFL members. Leroy Hood’s bio, title and abstract of talk can be found at: Lee Hood, Bio, Talk. The meeting is free-of-charge and open to all. Interested participants can RSVP at the ASEMFL Inaugural Meeting webpage.
The program and registration information can be found at ASEMFL Annual Meeting.
A pdf invite can be found here.
We would be honored if you are able to virtually join the ASEMFL Inaugural Annual Meeting on November 7, 2020. We would also welcome the opportunity of you inviting other colleagues of yours who might be interested in attending the ASEMFL Inaugural Annual Meeting on November 7, 2020.
Regards,
Michael Georgiopoulos ASEMFL Executive Director Dean CECS, UCF

Retirement@Work is coming soon – what you need to know
Managing your UCF voluntary 403(b) plan will soon be simpler. Beginning November 17, 2020, you will have access to the Retirement@Work online retirement plan portal. It brings all of your UCF voluntary 403(b) plan account information together, regardless of investment provider – AIG (formerly VALIC), Fidelity or TIAA.
Please note that the UCF voluntary 403(b) plan is separate from the Florida Retirement System (FRS), State University System Optional Retirement Program (SUSORP) and FICA Replacement plan. Contributions to a voluntary 403(b) account are in addition to the FRS, SUSORP and FICA Replacement plans.
WHAT’S CHANGING With Retirement@Work, you can manage your contributions online in one spot at your convenience, making it easier for you to:
- Track your progress: Get a snapshot of all your investments and view current and past transactions.
- Make informed decisions: Learn more about the UCF 403(b) retirement plan and use calculators and other tools to help plan for your retirement.
- Take action: Change your contribution amount or how it is split among your selected investment provider(s).
WHAT’S NOT CHANGING While you will have access to all of your investments in one location, these things will not change:
- The contribution amount coming from your paycheck each pay period
- Your investment choices
- Your beneficiary designations
QUIET PERIOD While the new system is being set up, there will be a blackout period beginning November 6, 2020, and ending November 16, 2020, during which you will not be able to make changes to your UCF voluntary 403(b) contribution rate or enroll in the plan. Please make sure you submit any changes (start, stop or modify contribution amount) using the current process (instructions here) no later than November 5, 2020. Once the new Retirement@Work system is live, you will be able to make changes again.
GETTING STARTED Once the Retirement@Work website is available, you will receive another email with instructions on how to log in and utilize the system. There is nothing you need to do at this point. For plan related questions, contact UCF HR Benefits at (407) 823-2771 or Benefits@ucf.edu.
