UP Parent Newsletter: January 2020
Dear Pilot Parents,
It seems like a week doesn’t go by that I don’t hear a nickname being coined for parents and their level of involvement in their student’s life (many of which are inaccurate). As we embark on a new semester, instead of “helicopters,” I propose that 2020 is the year of the tandem bike. New semesters are fresh starts–while your student takes the lead in driving their UP experience, we encourage you to be involved and support them along the way, letting our office be a resource for YOU.
Sincerely,
Katie Seccombe

A Window into Pilot Life

Today, the UP community is invited to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the inaugural MLK Day ON. With a day off from class, students are invited to "engage, reflect, and serve” by participating in service opportunities and hearing from a keynote speaker. We hope the conversation around topics discussed today continues within the classroom and at home. Ask your student if they participated!

First-Year & Sophomore Family Weekend

Tickets are on sale for First-Year and Sophomore Family Weekend, held February 14–16, 2020. The weekend is full of fantastic events for you and your student, including Residence Hall Socials, special events for each class, and Sunday Mass with the entire UP community. You can also join us for a Pilot Pregame lunch prior to the women’s basketball game, which includes a BBQ meal, games, and the chance to snap a picture with Wally. Register online by January 31, 2020!

Academic Spotlight: Pamplin School of Business

In 2007, the Pamplin School of Business began to discuss how they could better challenge their students to not only find a job after graduation, but to also discover a vocation. They developed a mantra: “A job pays the bills; a career is about self; but a vocation is about self in the context of community.” This set the school on a path to create a professional development program called the P4 – the Pamplin Professional Preparation Program.

Countdown to Commencement

As seniors enter their final semester, parents can play an important role in supporting and motivating them to get to the finish line! One way you can do this is by listening and reassuring them that everything is going to be okay. You can also stay in the know about Commencement, grad fairs, and special events for seniors.

Making the Most of College

Students are called by the UP mission to engage in faith, service, and leadership experiences for a continued education of the mind, heart, and hands. Whether your student is just starting to explore campus involvement options or looking to take the next step into leadership positions, the spring semester is the perfect time to get connected! We encourage you to take some time this month to talk with your student about how they can make the most of their time at UP.

First Generation Spotlight

First Generation (FGEN) students are students who are the first in their family to attend college. UP’s FGEN community serves as a resource for all FGEN students and families to ensure a smooth and successful transition from high school to college life and beyond. Read one FGEN student’s reflection on their experience at UP and their advice to parents of FGEN students.
