Welcome to the March edition of the Warrior Family Association e-newsletter! As I write this the sun is out, and while it is still a little chilly here in Fort Wayne, it feels like spring is right around the corner. Our students just got back from spring break, and it is nice to have activity again on campus. It was only a week, but I missed seeing everyone. Our marketing and communication team had some fun last week while our students were gone, and they produced this video – Spring Break Blues. Enjoy it – it made me laugh!
I am pleased to share with you that Indiana Tech was recently chosen to be Allen County’s academic partner for a high-tech crime lab that will soon be coming to Fort Wayne. Our students will have the opportunity to work with the Fort Wayne Police Department in a digital forensic laboratory where officers will collect and analyze evidence in various criminal cases. Our students may even be asked to testify in court to explain how they conducted their work! Read more about the new lab and Indiana Tech’s involvement here.
President Einolf and I are so proud of the many accomplishments of our students. This month I must highlight our collegiate cybersecurity team, the Cyber Warriors, which won the Indiana State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition for the eighth consecutive year. Our Cyber Warriors beat teams from both Indiana University and Purdue University. They went on to a Midwest Regional competition where they competed against nine other state winners and our Cyber Warriors came in second place. They can still qualify for the national championship competition by winning a wild-card round against the eight other regional second-place finishers on April 6. Visit techcyberwarriors.org to learn more about this talented group of students. We are extremely proud of them!

Shadha Tabatabai, Assistant Professor of Computer Science
- I earned my master's degree in computer science when I was 23 years old after I completed my bachelor’s in computer science in just three years.
- I submitted one of my research papers during my Ph.D. study in the hospital after giving birth to my youngest child because of the conference submission deadline.
- I love adventures and road trips. I traveled to 20 states by car and visited places like Walt Disney World in Florida, the World of Coca-Cola in Georgia, the Hershey's Chocolate World in Pennsylvania, the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, Mackinac Island in Michigan, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Niagara Falls in New York and many others. I still haven’t covered the west coast, yet!
- I’m very social and have hundreds of friends from all over the world.
Dr. Jeffrey L. Walls - Professor of Business, Senior Professional in Human Resources
- I attended the Women’s NAIA Cross Country National Championship in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Nov. 22, 2008, to see Alissa McKaig (Doehla) break the national record to win and become Tech’s first woman national champion from our track/cross country program.
- I attended the Women’s NAIA Golf National Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on May 26, 2017, with my wife (Susan), to see Courtney Dye win the NAIA national championship.
- I received the honor of developing and teaching Tech’s first graduate-level course to our first MBA students in 1999. The year 2021 marked the 20-year anniversary for this first graduating class.
Michael Dunne-Steece Assistant Professor of Human Services
- Growing up I was the only person in my household who was right-handed.
- I have worked in the field of human services since the age of 16. I started off as a CNA in a nursing home specializing in dementia and Alzheimer’s care.
- I have adopted two amazing children out of foster care.
- I am not ashamed to admit I am a Disney adult.

Final thoughts from a fellow mom
I hope that through these newsletters that I write each month, you have had the opportunity to get to know me better. I want you to know how much I personally care about your student at Indiana Tech. I also tell things as they are, and I try not to sugarcoat my experience as a fellow mom with my two sons.
My update this month about my sons is that they are both in a state of transition. Nicholas left his job at the pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center two weeks ago. He decided he wanted a job that could better utilize the MBA he just earned from Indiana Tech, and he is also hoping for better pay and regular work hours. He hasn’t found that new job yet, so I, of course, worry about him and what is next in his life. He has incredible confidence and optimism, and he tells me he will be fine. Did I mention that his lease on his apartment is up at the end of March?
Our other son, Thomas, had a great experience teaching math at a private boarding school in West Virginia this spring. He decided, though, not to renew his contract there for next year, as he would like to go to graduate school. So, I worry about what is next for him, too. He is currently applying to various programs and planning to work at Parkview Health part time as an informatics analyst. Karl and I just moved him into his apartment in January, and we may have to bring all his things back to Fort Wayne!
One highlight of March was that we all saw the musical, Hamilton, in Pittsburgh. I knew Karl and I would love it, but I was unsure what the boys would think. Thankfully, they loved it, too. They love hip hop and rap, and they raved about the dancing. I listened to the soundtrack on the entire drive home to Fort Wayne (much to Karl’s delight).
