As you consider applying for the SOUL position, you may be wondering what exactly it is that SOULs do. Throughout each work day, SOULs lead small groups, answer questions and guide new students and their families, and deliver information about student life at Miami. Topics you might guide new students on include homesickness, roommate conflicts, goal setting, registering for classes, and physical and mental wellness. Most importantly, SOULs are there to share their personal experiences at a Miami and about their transition to college. The overall goal that SOULs work toward is to begin creating a Miami community for the incoming class. Application Tips of the Week

Don't worry about trying to present yourself as a certain version of yourself, just be you! Present yourself as the person you truly are. The more authenticity you show in your application, the better!”  - Tre King (2019 SOUL Team)

Know your reason for applying. Don’t just apply because you want to be seen as a leader, apply because you care. When doing your application think about why you want to help first-year students! SOULs can be taught how to lead but you can’t be taught how to care.”
- Lucas Adams (2019 SOUL Team)
Recommendation Forms 101
When should I ask for a recommendation? Is there a specific way to go about asking?

Asking a recommender as far in advance as you can is super important. Life can get busy, and making sure the recommender has plenty of time to think over what to say in their recommendation is vital. A few weeks before the recommendation is due is ideal! As far as how to go about asking, just go for it! Most people are willing and eager to help out, and as long as you ask them kindly and with a genuine passion for the SOUL position, they should happily write a recommendation for you.
A pro-tip would be to tell them a little about why you want the position, and why you value them as a recommender. Plus, your recommenders for the SOUL position don't need to wait for you to submit your app. They can access the SOUL recommendation form on the SOUL website anytime! Good luck and always remember- you’ve got this!- Renée Smestad (2019 SOUL Team)
