FAQ of the Month
I want to sound more confident in my workplace communication. Any tips?
Great question! We often underestimate the importance of clear and confident communication. But good news: Making subtle changes can substantially improve how others perceive what you say or write AND your sense of control over your work.
  • Stop apologizing. In lieu of "Sorry for the delay, " try saying "thanks for your patience.
  • Use positive framing. Instead of “I don’t have extensive experience in that software,” you could say, “I’ve used that program in one class and realized I’m a quick learner when it comes to technology.” In academic life, this might mean saying "The research project is still on schedule" instead of "No, the project won’t be late."
  • Remove qualifying language (when you can). Try to cut down on phrases like "I think," "I feel" and "I believe" -- removing them entirely or swapping for things like "I expect" or "I am confident that ..." One caveat: you don't want to become too distracted by analyzing what you say or write, so incorporate changes when/if they make sense.
  • Don’t diminish your value. When making a comment in a meeting, don’t start off with “you probably already thought of this” or “I’m not an expert at this, but maybe ...” Aside from putting yourself down, it’s incredibly annoying to hear.
