Mark Your Calendars for the PDX People Customer Service Awards on Tuesday, July 25
To recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary, we hold the quarterly PDX People Customer Service Awards. Winners in each category – along with their managers and members of our volunteer working committee – are invited to attend the event in person while it's live-streamed on Facebook. To watch, head to the PDX Facebook page on Tuesday, July. 25, at noon.
As you know, the PDX People core values are to be knowledgeable, friendly and respectful. Guest speakers at this event will highlight each of these values: Abby Carey, concessions development manager with the Port of Portland, will share knowledge about the exciting new businesses opening at PDX in the future; Kathy Loter, program director of the Portland Area Canine Therapy Teams with DoveLewis Veterinary Hospital, will talk about how their program helps make PDX a friendly place; and Joyce DeMonnin, former communications manager with AARP and current AARP volunteer, will share communication strategies to demonstrate respectful service, particularly when communicating with older adults.
Missed the last virtual awards ceremony? View the event recording or read about past winners on the PDX People website. You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

What's New with PDX Next: D/E Bypass Closures and Baggage Claim Office Move
As a reminder, there are two ongoing impacts: Noise in the ticket lobby continues as workers connect the new roof to the existing one and, through late October, if you use TriMet's MAX Red Line to get to and from the airport, plan an extra 30 minutes of travel time due to a temporary closure. Shuttle buses currently serve all MAX Red Line stations between Gateway and PDX.
D/E Bypass: On Friday, July 14, from 1 to 4 a.m., the D/E bypass will close intermittently for concrete pours. There will be spotters in the bypass to close the area, and access will be maintained to the security exit doors. In urgent cases where an employee or passenger needs the bypass, work can be paused.
Baggage ClaimIn late July, the parking control representatives’ break room will move to P1 – we’ll keep you posted on the exact date.

Why Wait? Explore the New PDX Now
Point your phone camera. See what PDX will look like next year. It’s that simple to take a 360 virtual tour of PDX’s new check-in, garden and south hall concessions areas, featuring a bonus augmented reality (AR) experience with your favorite PDX Next characters. While the AR experience is exclusive to the airport, you can take the virtual tour from anywhere right now. This new creative campaign is in a pilot stage you may have already noticed the graphics and QR code in the bypasses and some food court areas. As we fine tune the experience for employees and travelers, email us your feedback and you could win a three-pack of stickers with the construction cone-hatted crab, rainbow cloud and skateboarding tree.
Volunteer Opportunity: Passport to Inclusion
The Port of Portland, Autism Society of Oregon, United Airlines and TSA are hosting Passport to Inclusion, a mock travel event and scavenger hunt designed to help travelers with disabilities and their families or companions prepare for future travel. Volunteers are needed to assist with event. If you'd like to volunteer on Saturday, July 29, contact Walt Marchbanks – you'll even get lunch and a free t-shirt! If you have friends and family who might be interested in attending, share this link to sign up for the event.
PDX in Pictures
Later this year, Portland Airport Fire and Rescue will welcome a very special delivery…and we’re giving you a sneak peek!
As seen above, Foam Truck 87 is on its way down the production line at Oshkosh Corporation in Appleton, Wisconsin. These are the large, specialized airport firefighting vehicles you see operating at PDX – it's required by the Federal Aviation Administration to always maintain a fleet of three of these vehicles for initial aircraft emergency response.
This will be our first foam truck equipped with a high reach extendable turret, which can be extended up to 50 feet to pierce a structure and deploy agent in hard-to-reach areas. Thanks to Fire Chief Rob Mathis for sharing this behind-the-scenes look as Foam Truck 87 makes its way down the assembly line on its way to PDX!
