News That Rocks

This Summer 2022 Season is HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

2022 All Stars!

In July, two of our House Band students had the amazing opportunity to participate in the School of Rock All Stars program! All Stars is the highest level of achievement for any School of Rock student and less than 1% of students make it into this prestigious program. Milo and Beck were selected from a huge pool of applicants from all over the world to play with the very best students that SoR has to offer. They represented the Silver Spring school as they rehearsed, recorded, and performed around the Philadelphia area with the Northeast team. We are so proud of both Beck and Milo!

Summer 2022 is Rockin' Across the U.S.A.

The summer season of the Performance Program is in full swing and all three shows are sounding great! With the Rockin Across the USA theme, all three shows feature a wide variety of music including some SoR classics like Jimi Hendrix, Joan Jett, and Nirvana, as well as songs from genres like indie, folk, funk, and blues. It's been awesome exploring the musical history of Philadelphia, Seattle and Chicago and learning more about what it means to be part of a musical scene. The students have been doing an excellent job covering for each other as people enjoy their summer vacations and making sure rehearsals are always a blast! We are already focusing our eyes on the end of season performance which will be happening the first two weekends of October, so mark your calendars! We'll be rocking out all summer long!

The Summer 2022 Adult Performance Program!

Who said rocking out is just for the kids? Our Adult Performance Program is back this season with a British Invasion theme featuring songs from The Beatles and The Who, Sabbath and the Stones, and much more! Show Director Jaime has the band cooking already after a few rehearsals and they are going to be lighting up the stage come October! The adult group this season has been having an awesome time jamming together and the fun is going to keep going all season. The British are coming!!!

Summer Camps Are Coming To An End

Its been a really fantastic Summer Camp season for us here at School of Rock Silver Spring. It's really remarkable to see the progress the campers  make in a week of playing together.  We of course would not be able to do this with out the help of our student interns, returning alums and Summer Staff. They all deserve a round of applause. Our last two camps of the season will be the weeks of August 1st and August 8th (you can still purchase the few remaining camps HERE).  We have changed our camp show location to McGinty's Public House at 3pm on Fridays. Shows are free and open to the public.

Rock 101 classes in the Fall

Our Rock 101 classes took a hiatus for the Summer but we are going to be ready to Rock in the Fall.  Rock 101 is a class where we bring students of similar ages and experience levels together to learn how to play as a band. The students have a set list of songs they will all be learning as a group and working on with their instructors during their private music lessons.  If you think your rocker is ready to take there musicianship to the next level, now is the time to contact Rose (rbarber@schoolof rock.com) about getting on a class roster this Fall.

Student Spotlight!

Gio

This month we have choosen to spotlight Gio. Gio came to us with some drum experience mid Spring.  He joined a Rock 101 Lab for a little over a month to get the feel for playing with other musicians before jumping into his first Performance Program season this Summer in our Seattle show.  You can see him Rock out in the end of season show this October!

Our lead instructor and show director, Jeff sat down with Gio to ask him a few questions.

You've experienced School of Rock in Rock 101 as a lessons student and have joined performance, what do you like about the summer programs?

I love being able to work with other people, working on songs together. It's helped a lot when it comes to communication and team effort

How would you say your playing has changed since joining SoR?
It has expanded the mindset when it comes to working with others

What are your musical influences?
Connor Dennis, (Beartooth) I think he's one of the bigger influences because of the commitment and energy. It feels spiritual in a way.

What do you like about School of Rock?
The environment. It's very comfortable and fun!

Anything you'd like to say about your current drum instructor Maynold?
He's really good. Not only is he teaching me to play but giving me advice every time I come here. He's fun to talk to and share stories about music, he's a good teacher!

What advice do you have for new students?
My advice is just have fun while learning songs, don't stress yourself out. Make friends, it's easy to make friends here.

Say Hello To Our Newest Addition To The Team Kevin!
We are thrilled to introduce our latest addition to the SoR team, Kevin MacKaye. Still getting settled in from his moving to the DC area from Maine, he enthusiastically jumped in by doing some subbing for teachers taking vacations and helping direct Summer Camps.  A multi-instrumentalist with a focus on Guitar, Kevin will be assisting the Adult PP group this season. In his youth he toured with internationally recognized Windham Chamber Singers that performed with artists like Josh Groban and Jodi Benson. After highschool he formed the funk/punk/prog-rock/pop band The Running Gags, playing guitar and bass and singing lead. He loves rap and hip-hop, creating samples and producing beats. In more recent years, he has been writing songs for two television series. Kevin loves the collaborative process of making music just as much as performing it, and says he feels right at home at the School of Rock.

THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with Our Music Director -  Brooks

TIME MANAGEMENT- It's hard to imagine now, but summer is almost over! As we head into the fall and the start of a new school year, start planning out how you'll manage your time and develop a practice routine. Consistent and frequent practice are essential for your musical growth! Whether you're preparing for a Performance Program show in the fall, working on Rock 101 tunes, or looking to take the next step in your musical journey, practice structure is crucial. Don't let the change in your schedule stop you from accomplishing your goals! Talk with your instructor this month about how to manage your time and implement a practice plan.
