'Michigan Overboard' Business a Way to Give Back for Two GVSU Alumni

When Jeff Cremonte and Derek Hoggard moved in across the hall from each other in the Seidman Living Center during their freshman year, they had no idea what the future had in store. This past January, the two officially launched their small business, Michigan Overboard, an eco-friendly product sales company that currently creates athletic headbands and decals centered on Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Conference to Feature First African American Astronaut to Travel to Space

A two-day symposium hosted by Grand Valley and the Grand Rapids Public Museum will celebrate space exploration, featuring Guion "Guy" Bluford, a retired NASA astronaut who was the first African American to travel to space.  
The conference will take place February 16-17 at the DeVos Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. Register by February 11

East Asia Student-Alumni Event

Join fellow alumni and current students of Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Studies at the first annual East Asia Student-Alumni Event, featuring an alumni panel. This evening of reunion and networking will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room in the Holton-Hooker Learning and Living Center on March 15 from 6-8 p.m. The event is $5 for alumni. WGVU Presents "I Have Made a Difference" Awards

A total of 13 people or organizations received an "I Have Made a Difference" award from WGVU Public Media, in recognition for their contributions in the community.
Awards were given out by the WGVU Engage Committee in eight categories: Inclusion, Health, Arts, Veterans, Education, People's Choice, Non-profit of the Year, and Person of the Year.

Fostering Laker Success

Are you a Laker that experienced foster care? A Center for Women and Gender Equity program, Fostering Laker Success, is holding an end of year reception on April 18. Mingle with other Lakers who also experienced foster care and hear about the program's mission — to recruit, retain, and graduate youth that have experience with the foster care system with the goal of post-secondary completion at GVSU. Five Lakers Earn GLIAC Fall Commissioner's Award

Five Grand Valley State Lakers earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Fall 2017 Commissioner's Awards. Female athletes Gabriella Mencotti, Gina Patterson, and Shannon Quinn and male athletes Nick Keizer and Collin Schlosser received the league honors. The awards are presented after the Fall, Winter, and Spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes in the conference that excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

Even with the university's commitment to keep costs low so that students can attain a Grand Valley education, 90% of today’s GVSU students require some level of financial support, with over 60% taking out additional loans. You can help off-set the financial burden for students with an annual gift to the Opportunity Fund for Access and Affordability. Gifts of any size are welcome and will help students immediately.

Join over 100 Alumni Champions who are sharing the excitement and momentum of Grand Valley with their fellow Lakers. Alumni Champions work to increase alumni engagement and philanthropic support for the university. They support the university themselves at the leadership level, and encourage fellow Lakers to play a more active role in support of students. Champions build their personal and professional networks, take part in leadership development initiatives, and receive recognition at GVSU events and in publications.
