This fall, we welcomed our largest freshman class to Clemson, and the energy on our campus is palpable. Students followed the paws on the roads leading to campus, coming home to one of our nation’s top research and teaching universities with a student experience second to none.

This summer, we celebrated alumna Emily Wallace ’72. Her latest gift establishes the Emily Peek Wallace ’72 Endowed Directorship for the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. Emily is a trailblazer, first as a student and then in industry. She continues that trend with the first endowed faculty position in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.

Emily Peek Wallace ’72 knows the importance of getting an opportunity. The human body’s immune system has natural killer cells. Clemson University researcher Yanzhang (Charlie) Wei has developed a bifunctional protein that triggers them to target and kill breast cancer tumor cells. Trudy Mackay was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. She is the first professor at Clemson to become a member.

Marco Ajello, associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, received the 2021 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.

The Clemson Young Alumni Council included two science alumni — Dorothy H. Askins and Rebecca Leigh Stratford — in its 2020 Roaring10 young alumni award recipients. Each year, the Council honors 10 individuals who received undergraduate or graduate degrees within the past 10 years and who exemplify Clemson’s core values.

COSMIC, the College of Science’s peer-to-peer mentoring program that supports incoming students in their transition to college, received a 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Chemistry Ph.D. alumnae Brynna Quarles has teamed up with her mathematician sister Maggie to start a history of science podcast called “BA in Science.”
