June 4 Softball Memo

The second week of regular season play is almost complete, and the calendar has turned to June. As the season chugs along, there are a few things I’d like to bring to your attention.

Regional hosting: I sent an email blast to coaches and athletic directors that contains a list of schools that have applied to be considered as regional host sites for the regional tournament. That list can be accessed by clicking here. There is still time to apply to host. The application can be found in your Varsity Bound account and by clicking on the IGHSAU logo on the left row of icons on your Varsity Bound home page. When you click on the logo, you’ll be taken to several forms, including the site availability. If you need help filling this out, please feel free to contact me.

Evaluate Your Umpires: We would like coaches to evaluate the umpires that work your games. You can do this in Varsity Bound when you are entering your statistics. Just click on the white box with the three vertical dots and select “officials”. You can then select your umpires and fill out a series of questions. It shouldn’t take more than a minute to complete, and the information is very valuable to our umpire liaison Cathy Creighton. Again, feel free to contact me if you need any help getting this completed.

Finding Umpires: If your school is having issues finding umpires, please contact us. We have sent email blasts out on behalf of schools that were having trouble finding officials and have been successful finding officials to work. Please contact Sherry Tegtmeier at sherry@ighsau.org to give her specifics (date, time, opponent, contact info, etc.) for her to send out.

Umpire Newsletter: IGHSAU officials liaison Cathy Creighton posted her first umpire newsletter of the season last week. I recommend reading it if you haven't already done so. Click here if you wish to read it.

Metal Cleats: I’ve had a few calls regarding metal cleats in junior high softball. Metal cleats may be worn in junior high contests.

QuikStats: I have been very pleased with the job that coaches have done this season updating QuikStats. Keep it up! Remember, we check every Tuesday to make sure schools are complying. The expectation is that every game though Saturday should be posted in QuikStats when we check on Tuesday. Also, please remember to that every stat category needs to be filled. If you need some guidance on keeping stats, the NCAA has an excellent guide that can be downloaded by clicking here.

Regional Pairings: I am tentatively planning to release regional softball pairings the week of June 21st, likely June 24 or 25.

Thanks for all you do for the Iowa Girl.
